Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Technician

The Lawrence County Generating Station in Lawrence County features six LM6000 simple-cycle turbines, delivering a total capacity of 270 MW. Opportunity Summary

The Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Technician ensures reliable and efficient operation of power plant systems, including combined cycle combustion turbines, heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs), and auxiliary equipment such as air compressors, steam turbines, and condensers. They perform startup, shutdown, inspections, and minor repairs while adhering to safety protocols and maintaining accurate operational logs. By collaborating with maintenance teams and leveraging Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), the technician supports equipment reliability and optimal plant performance.

Your scope of responsibility as O&M Technician will include the following primary functions:

• Perform startup, shutdown, and normal operation of plant systems, including turbine-generators, combined cycle combustion turbines, HRSGs, and RO systems, in accordance with standard procedures.


• Operate and monitor auxiliary systems such as air compressors, demineralized water systems, generator cooling equipment, steam turbines, condensers, motors, and rotating machinery to ensure stable plant performance.


• Observe, log, and analyze equipment parameters—pressure, temperature, vibration, fluid levels, and run hours—using instruments; perform visual and auditory inspections, basic lubrication, adjustments, or minor repairs.


• Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and instrumentation issues to minimize downtime and maintain operational readiness.


• Install, calibrate, test, and maintain instrumentation and control equipment, including transmitters, sensors, and relays; interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and schematics as needed.


• Assist in the installation, replacement, and testing of electrical components including motors, transformers, circuit breakers, rectifiers, batteries, and communication systems under supervision.


• Perform mechanical repairs and maintenance on plant equipment, buildings, and structures, including incidental welding, brazing, and cutting within applicable safety and code limits.


• Safely operate tools and support equipment such as vehicles, hoists, cranes, welders, and cutting torches as needed for operational and maintenance activities.


• Support scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and outages by working collaboratively with plant teams to ensure efficient and timely task completion.


• Maintain accurate records and logs of maintenance actions, operational activities, abnormal conditions, and equipment performance in accordance with plant protocols.


• Use the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to manage work orders, track repairs, log spare parts usage, and ensure timely data entry and maintenance tracking.


• Participate in internal and external switching, tagging, and lockout/tagout procedures under supervision, and support the plant’s safety tagging and regulatory compliance programs.


• Follow all facility safety policies, environmental regulations, and standard operating procedures to ensure safe and compliant plant operations.


• After appropriate training, assist in unloading fuel and other materials using established plant procedures.


• Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work environment in assigned work and equipment areas.


• Promptly report abnormal conditions and take corrective actions within prescribed guidelines to prevent hazards or equipment damage.


• Work cooperatively with plant staff to support overall operational, maintenance, and safety goals.


• Travel to and support operations and maintenance activities at the Hoosier Worthington Generating Station as needed.


• Fulfill other tasks as assigned by the Plant Manager, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of plant operations.

Working Relationships

The O&M Technician reports to the Operations and Maintenance Manager and takes general direction from other plant management. Additionally, this position will coordinate with all other plant personnel to ensure safe and reliable plant operations.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds.

Power plant environment that may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling hazardous materials, with exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise. Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions.

Some duties may require the use of protective equipment, which can include hard hats, safety glasses, and eye protection, air masks/respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), hot gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required. Strict smoking restrictions apply in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

The O&M Technician works rotating 9-hour day and evening shifts and is on call every other weekend. This position will also occasionally necessitate extended working hours and flexible shifts as needed, including weekends and holidays, in response to schedules, workload demands, and plant conditions. Periodic callouts or “On call” status may also be required.

Compensation

This position offers a base pay rate ranging from $39.07 to $54.77 per hour, along with an annual performance bonus

Core Qualifications and Skills

We are looking for a skilled Technician with experience in power generation operations and maintenance, coupled with a proven ability to contribute effectively to team success and consistently meet performance standards.

• Ability to understand procedures and instructions related to the assigned area, typically acquired through four years of high school. An Associate degree in power plant technology, a related technical field, or engineering is preferred. Relevant industry or military experience may be considered in lieu of education.


• Proven track record in technician roles within power generation, with hands-on experience in operating and maintaining combustion turbines, auxiliary systems, and combined cycle gas turbine systems.


• Expertise in journeyman-level operations and mechanical systems, including startup, shutdown, routine operation, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems, plus disassembly/reassembly of pumps, valves, turbine-generators, and electronic/microprocessor components.


• Theoretical and practical knowledge of gas and steam turbine operations, Continuous Emission Monitoring (CEMS) systems, electrical systems, piping and instrument schematics, process controls, and inspection/recording of plant parameters.


• Skilled in interpreting and troubleshooting blueprints, electrical schematics, and wiring diagrams, while documenting maintenance to ensure compliance and optimize equipment performance and reliability.


• Thorough understanding of safety protocols, including Lock-Out-Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures, OSHA requirements, and environmental compliance standards.


• Advanced problem-solving abilities with a strong foundation in technical writing and communication, coupled with mathematical aptitude to convey complex concepts and solutions clearly.


• Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.
