Job Description - Ophthalmic Assistant

Description

The Ophthalmic Assistant supports ophthalmologists by performing preliminary patient work-ups, diagnostic testing, and clinical procedures. This role is critical in ensuring a high standard of patient care and clinical efficiency in a fast-paced ophthalmology setting. The ideal candidate is patient-focused, detail-oriented, and committed to learning and growing in the eye care field. 

Requirements

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Greet and escort patients to exam rooms, verifying patient information and documenting chief complaints and medical history.
     
  • Measure and record visual acuity, intraocular pressure, and basic ocular measurements.
     
  • Assist in administering eye drops, dilation, and anesthetic agents under physician direction.
     
  • Perform and assist with diagnostic tests such as OCT, visual fields, fundus photography, topography, and other imaging procedures.
     
  • Prepare patients and assist the physician during examinations and minor procedures.
     
  • Accurately document examination findings and physician orders in the electronic medical record (EMR).
     
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of exam rooms, equipment, and instruments.
     
  • Provide pre- and post-operative patient education and answer general questions regarding treatment plans.
     
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA and infection control guidelines.
     
  • Participate in ongoing training and certification efforts to enhance skills and meet organizational requirements.
     

Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
     
  • Completion of an ophthalmic assistant training program preferred.
     
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in a clinical or ophthalmic setting is a plus.
     
  • COA (Certified Ophthalmic Assistant) certification preferred or willingness to obtain within a designated timeframe.
     

Skills & Competencies:

  • Excellent patient communication and interpersonal skills.
     
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow clinical protocols.
     
  • Comfort using EMR systems and standard ophthalmic equipment.
     
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced clinical environment.
     
  • Professional, reliable, and team-oriented attitude.
