The University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, has an exciting full time opportunity for an Ophthalmic Imager 1 (OI1) in Miami, Florida. The Ophthalmic Imager 1 (OI1) is competent in the theory, principles, and practice of eye care. The position documents inthe EMR system and performs ocular diagnostic testing using specialized instrumentation in compliance with department
standards.

JOB FUNCTIONS    

  • Performs diagnostic testing including but not limited to the below.

  • Color fundus photography

  • Fluorescein angiography

  • ICG (Indocyanine Green) angiography

  • Optical coherence tomography

  • Automated perimetry

  • Slit lamp photography

  • External photography

  • Ocular motility photography

  • Performs supervised ocular diagnostic testing using specialty-specific imaging instruments, documents procedures, and

  • uploads images into the electronic medical record/PACS platform.

  • Provides patient-centric care.

  • Adheres to University of Miami policies, standards, and values.

  • Complies with regulations and maintains patient confidentiality.

  • Follows best practices of patient safety, hand hygiene, and infection control.

  • Completes University of Miami mandatory in-services and online training.

  • Attends educational courses for ophthalmic personnel when assigned.

  • Demonstrates high quality of work through accuracy, timeliness, professionalism, and thoroughness.

  • Meets daily productivity goals.

  • Ensures all equipment is calibrated, and instrumentation is in proper working order.

  • Organizes and stocks rooms for daily clinical activities.

  • Travels to satellite eye centers when necessary.

  • Works evenings and weekends as needed.

  • Performs organizational duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS    

Education: High School diploma or equivalent

Experience: 1 year of relevant experience

  • Displays intermediate knowledge of ocular anatomy, function, and motility.

  • Demonstrates basic comprehension of refractometry.

  • Identifies imaging instruments and modalities based on diagnosis.

  • Knowledgeable in computer software for all imaging modalities.

  • Independently performs standardized imaging protocols based on diagnosis.

  • Competent in stereopsis technique.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

  • Certifies and performs all clinical research imaging such as digital fluorescein and ICG angiography, color fundus photography, optical coherence tomography, microperimetry, slit lamp, and gonio photography. Additional exams such as Humphrey visual field testing, keratometry, axial eye length measurements and IOL calculations may be required to be performed as well as any modality requested by a sponsor or principal investigator.

  • Certifies and performs all clinical research assessments including full-field stimulus threshold (FST), Octopus visual field testing (kinetic and static), full-field Electroretinography (ffERG), multifocal Electroretinography (mfERG), pattern electroretinography (PERG), visual evoked potentials (VEP), electrooculography (EOG), color vision testing, dark adaptation, ETDRS visual acuity test, low-luminance visual acuity test, and mobility testing.

  • Acquires and maintains certification through multiple reading centers by following study imaging protocol instructions.  Masks and prepares various digital files to be submitted through online portals, upload clients and cloud-based file sharing systems. 

  • Acquires and maintains certification of all imaging equipment to be used in clinical research. Notifies reading centers of any software upgrades. Performs various maintenance on machines such as cleaning lenses, air filters and internal components. Contacts vendors when research imaging devices are not functioning in order to work towards a solution. Maintains and updates records of all certified devices and provides sponsors and coordinators with site assessment information.

  • Assists in writing imaging protocols for investigator sponsored trials.

  • Maintains good relationships with reading centers and sponsors and addresses deviations and queries in a timely manner.

  • Attends department meetings, meets with study monitors, attend in-service meetings regarding new studies and regular one on one meetings with supervisor at different locations. May need to travel out of town for sponsor/investigator meetings or to attend educational conferences.

  • Coordinates and communicates with research and non-research staff to ensure effective patient workflow. Inform supervisor and hospital leadership of any workflow issues that need to be addressed.

  • Gains and maintains CITI certifications group one conflict of interest and GCP certification before being involved with clinical research studies.

  • Maintains a record of all study visits and provides reports and assessments when requested by supervisor.

  • Travels to different locations upon request.

  •  Maybe required to perform activities such as informed consents, maintaining study subject records, IRB submissions and assisting with coordinating study visits.

  • Creates imaging protocol summaries for backup imaging staff. Submits certification and clinical research images on behalf of all back up photographers.

  • Assists other satellite locations with study imaging submissions. Learn to successfully navigate multiple reading center submission portals independently
