Job Title: Ophthalmic Medical Assistant - Photo Biomodulation (PBM) Project

Department: Clinic 

Reports To: Clinic Supervisor & Director of Clinical Leadership

FLSA Status: Full Time, Non-Exempt

Wage Range: $23-$26 per hour

Summary:

The Ophthalmic Medical Assistant will support our innovative Photo Biomodulation (PBM) project, a cutting-edge, non-invasive treatment designed to enhance patient outcomes through advanced light-based therapy. This role is ideal for a motivated, detail-oriented professional who enjoys working with emerging medical technology and contributing to forward-thinking patient care initiatives. 

The Medical Assistant will play a key role in ensuring smooth patient flow, supporting PBM treatments, and maintaining a high standard of clinical excellence while modeling professionalism, collaboration, and compassion.  The role requires anticipating the needs of both patients and providers, modeling pleasant, professional, and collaborative behavior, and ensuring strict compliance with HIPAA regulations. 

 

Essential Functions:

  • Greet patients in a professional, pleasant, and welcoming manner.
  • Obtain, document, and update patient history accurately in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Assist with and support Photo Biomodulation (PBM) treatments in accordance with established protocols and provider direction.
  • Serve in a dual capacity as a Medical Assistant for the PBM project and as an Ophthalmic Technician within the clinic, supporting patient testing, treatments, and overall clinical operations as needed. 
  • Perform pre-examination testing as needed, including visual acuity and other basic ophthalmic assessments.
  • Prepare patients for PBM treatment, provide general process education, and ensure patient comfort throughout the visit.
  • Clean and prepare exam and treatment rooms following established sanitization and infection-control protocols.
  • Communicate consistently with technicians, providers, and leadership to ensure efficient patient flow.

Auxiliary Functions:

  • Refer patient questions regarding diagnoses, test results, or treatment plans to the provider as appropriate.
  • Monitor, maintain, and stock exam and procedure rooms, including PBM-related supplies.
  • Track and report supply inventory.
  • Assist providers in other offices as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support clinic operations and the PBM project.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of clinical equipment, medical assisting procedures, and interest in or experience with emerging technologies such as Photo Biomodulation (PBM).
  • Ability to follow clinical protocols and departmental policies to ensure consistency and quality of care.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build effective working relationships across all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to accurately document patient information in an electronic health record (EHR).
  • Excellent judgment, initiative, and decision-making skills in a clinical environment.
  • Consistently pleasant, professional, and collaborative demeanor.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding patient, company, and employee information.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced setting.

Requirements

 Minimum Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience as a Medical Assistant, Ophthalmic Technician, or in a related clinical role.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology and clinical workflows.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision while collaborating effectively with a clinical team.
  • Willingness and ability to be trained on Photo Biomodulation (PBM) technology and related treatment protocols.
  • Reliable attendance and flexibility to support a project-based or evolving schedule.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) certification preferred

Physical Requirements/Typical Working Conditions Environment: Primarily a temperature-controlled facility.  

  • Work may require prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.  
  • Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate clinical testing equipment, a keyboard, mouse, and standard office equipment.   
  • Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to communicate in person, by phone, or over video.   
  • Requires occasional lifting of papers or boxes up to 30 pounds. 

Essential Physical Tasks: 

  • Sight – sufficient to read physical documents, and images on a computer monitor.  
  • Smell – sufficient to discern smoke/something burning, and other odors. 
  • Hear – sufficient to hold face to face/telephone/video call conversations, and to discern other ambient noises.  
  • Touch – sufficient to operate keyboard, mouse, other standard office equipment, and writing implements. 
  • Physical ability/strength – sufficient to lift, twist, turn, reach, climb, kneel, squat, sit, walk, stand, bend as needed throughout a standard shift.
