Job Description - OPHTHALMIC TECH SURGICAL SCHEDULER

Description

JOB SUMMARY OPHTHALMIC TECH:  To work-up patients, perform ophthalmic testing and scribing.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES OF OPHTHALMIC TECH

  1. History and physical of patient
  2. Visions,
  3. Refraction
  4. Applanation tonometry
  5. Photography
  6. Pachymetry
  7. Osmolarity
  8. Scribe
  9. Rooming
  10. Visual fields
  11. OCT
  12. Assist physician

JOB SUMMARY SURGICAL SCHEDULER: Discuss procedure with patient, assign date of procedure, schedule pre-op physical with Primary Care Physician, arrange eye measurements, check with insurance (need for pre-auth), notify patient of above. Notify Surgery Center or hospital of admit date, time, special needs. Arrange all necessary paperwork, consents for physician and surgery center.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES OF SURGICAL SCHEDULER

1. Coordinate the schedule of the surgical procedure as to block booking. 

2. Schedules appointments for pre-op physical.

3. Patient instructions including reinforcing the physician’s explanation of the procedure to be performed.

4. Forward physician completed “informed consent” forms to Surgery Center.

5. Does related work as required.

6. Maintains confidentiality of all information regarding their patients.

7. Maintains effective working relationships with other departments, peers at other institutions, MD’s, patients and family members.

8. Displays concise and clear communication skills.

9. May be exposed to hazardous drugs. 

10. Attends OSHA training upon initial employee orientation and annually completes an OSHA competency.

RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS: Direct relationship with patients/families, physicians, SDMG staff, and hospital staff.

Requirements

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE: Graduated from High School or completed GED requirements with considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of ophthalmology and updated on insurance mandates, or graduation of accredited nursing school with an active New York State license. A minimum of two years experience in surgical setting preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Classification of work level: Heavy. Requires sitting, standing, bending and reaching. May require lifting up to 100 pounds using proper body mechanics. Requires manual dexterity to operate standard office equipment such as computer, fax and telephone. Requires hearing and vision that is adequate to perform job duties.
