Ophthalmic Technician

Full-Time (FT) Role

Principal Duties, Expectations, and Responsibilities 

The primary function of the Ophthalmic Technician is to assist ophthalmologists by performing preliminary eye examinations, gathering patient history, conducting diagnostic tests, and providing patient education. This role ensures efficient clinic operations while delivering excellent patient care. • Provides excellent customer service, establishes rapport with patients, and answers questions and concerns to their satisfaction.
• Takes a thorough case history to document pertinent background medical and ocular conditions.
• Captures intraocular pressure measurements and records accurately.
• Records patient visual acuities using Snellen, Lea, and HOTV methods.
• Uses auto-refractor and inputs data into the electronic health record system.
• Uses a lensometer to measure patient prescriptions and inputs data into the electronic health system.
• Applies dilation drops to patients when directed by the optometrist/ophthalmologist on staff.
• Works well in assisting optometrist/ophthalmologist with patient care.
• Works effectively with children, adults, special populations, and individuals experiencing homelessness.
• Maintains accurate documentation in patient medical records, either in paper or EMR format.
• Maintains proper sterilization and cleaning techniques:
• Cleans exam rooms prior to initiating eye examinations.
• Cleans eye occluders and other ophthalmic instruments using infection control techniques.
• Ensures exam rooms or lanes are stocked with necessary supplies and instruments.
• Provides translation services as needed and assists patients in understanding instructions pertinent to their care.
• Verifies insurance information and completes authorizations for exams and materials as needed.
• Complies with organizational policies and procedures.
• Informs the Vision Director of matters of general interest and problem areas as they are determined or discovered.
• Maintain accuracy of patient demographics and encounters.
• Attends all mandatory meetings and other requested meetings.
• Adhere to HIPAA regulations and other relevant laws to protect patient privacy and confidentiality in all communications.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the executive leadership and administration.

Education, Certification, and Experience Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 1 year of experience in vision.
• Electronic Health Record (EHR) experience, preferred. 
• Basic knowledge of vision terminology. 

Language Requirements

• Spanish speaking required.
