Job Description - Optical Engineer II

The Optical Engineer is responsible for designing a wide range of optical systems used in visual and interferometric imaging products, as well as laser beam–delivery applications. Working as part of a multidisciplinary design team, this role develops high‑performance, cost‑effective solutions. The Optical Engineer will use optical design and simulation tools (e.g., Zemax, Code V, OSLO) to create manufacturable, properly toleranced systems and clearly communicate design considerations, constraints, and trade-offs to stakeholders.

Although the location of the position is in Morganville, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations.

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on projects to define and support the optical requirements of fiber processing and inspection systems, including imaging optics, illumination, camera selection and image system layout.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in interferometric analysis and how to use interferometric systems to measure surfaces.
  • Design optical system design using Code V, OSLO or Zemax, with Zemax as the preferred platform.
  • Produce detailed documentation on design work, experiments, prototypes, and verification testing.
  • Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles to ensure cost-effective optical solutions.
  • Assist production, R&D and design teams with optical system testing, validation, and troubleshooting.
  • Prepare and present optical test and system analysis data to both optics and non-optics engineers.
  • Participate in engineering and general design reviews.
  • Identify and develop vendors capable of producing high quality optical components.
  • Proactively share insights and opportunities for implementation on emerging technologies, applications, products, and manufacturing techniques within the industry.

In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, the position is also responsible for:

  • Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
  • Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.

Physical Activities:

Work may be active, could stand or sit for long durations and/or perform repetitious work at times. The employee may lift or move objects up to 20 pounds. Employees must grasp, manipulate, or assemble parts and components that are often very small. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however, may be noisy at times. Must be able to wear appropriate clothing and personal protective equipment such as but not limited to masks, glasses, gloves, and specialty garments. The required PPE and training allow for the safe handling and processing of chemicals like adhesives, lubricants and solvents, and safe operation of job-related equipment and tools.

Experience:

  • 5 - 10 years of experience designing optical systems with experience transferring designs into production

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Optical Engineering, or Physics

 Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Expertise in imaging design principles and techniques to achieve precision imaging and/or optical interferometric measurements.
  • Experience with CAD, prefer SolidWorks or Inventor.
  • Demonstrated technical background. Hands on experience with precision optics and mechanics including alignment, measurement, and testing.
  • Proficiency with Zemax as the primary optical design tool.
  • Able to take direction and then bring tasks to completion with support as required.
  • Able to work well with others in a team environment, providing both input and feedback in a helpful manner.

 Pay range for this position is $77,000-$110,000 depending on experience
