Job Description - Optometrist

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


 



  • Provides direct optometric medical services to patients of the clinic including examination, diagnosis, planning, treatment and evaluation of progress with an emphasis on prevention.

  • Conducts eye exams using optometric equipment and general diagnostic interpretation.

  • Diagnoses and treats ocular disease.

  • Prescribes, fits, and adjusts eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other vision aids.

  • Recommends appropriate patient follow-up and care options.

  • Answers questions and provides advice to patients regarding vision and optical issues.

  • Accurately and systematically documents patient health information in the BSHC Electronic Medical Record System.

  • Communicates appropriately with patients and patient families regarding patient’s condition and treatment.

  • Keeps regularly scheduled clinic hours and is available to provide patient care at all times during these hours.

  • Cooperates in promoting the team concept of health care delivery.

  • Provides clinical supervision to optometric medical support staff.

  • When requested, advises Clinic Director, Medical Director, Chief Executive Officer, and/or Board of Directors on questions involving optometric medical matters.

  • In collaboration with Clinic Director, Medical Director, Chief Executive Officer and other professional staff members, assists in development and periodic updating of any standards of care, principles of practice, standing orders, clinical protocols, support staff job descriptions (to delineate responsibilities of each team member), and other medical policies that may be promulgated by BSHC.

  • Assists in the development of training and continuing education opportunities for optometric medical support staff.

  • Actively participates in assuring continuing quality control in the delivery of health services to BSHC patients. May participate in audit procedures for quality assurance.

  • Assists in health care planning for BSHC. Maintains familiarity with Corporation’s mission, goals, objectives, polices and protocols or procedures that are relevant to health care and works with Medical Director, Chief Executive Officer and professional staff to assure health care objectives are met.

  • Adheres to the terms and conditions set forth in BSHC’s corporate compliance program.

  • Ensures confidential information in accordance with BSHC’s policy and current HIPAA regulations.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:


 



  • Licensure to practice medicine as an Optometrist in the state of Kentucky.

  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.

  • Commitment to providing consistent, nonjudgmental, quality health care to underserved communities


 


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:


 



  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
