About Us
MEET DR. HOLTZEN
Dedication to ongoing professional development through continuing education and the acquisition of new technologies is at the core of Dr. John Holtzen’s practice. But although Dr. Holtzen is passionate about utilizing skill and technology to change the lives of his patients, his greatest passion is found in his desire to provide health care in a fashion that lets each patient know that he cares deeply for their individual needs and for their overall experience.
Dr. Holtzen began his career in 1999 as co-founder of the Nevada Oral & Facial Surgery with Dr. Brendan Johnson. Over the past 20 years, Nevada Oral & Facial Surgery group in Nevada has offered the most technically advanced maxillofacial and oral surgical care available. Dr. Holtzen has been voted the Las Vegas Review Journal’s Top Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon by his peers multiple times.
In 2011, Dr. Holtzen and his wife made the decision to pursue their love of Montana by relocating their family to the Bitterroot Valley, just south of Missoula. He joined the Surgical Arts Centre and became the partner of its founder, Dr. Clark Taylor, the following year. In 2019 Dr. Holtzen took sole ownership of that practice, and it is now called Alpine Oral and Facial Surgery.
A native of Northern California, Dr. Holtzen grew up in the small rural farming community of Healdsburg. He and his wife, Tammy, have been married for twenty-one years and have five children and one beautiful granddaughter. The Holtzen family enjoys the outdoors, hunting, fishing, hiking, and exploring Montana’s waterways. The whole family also has a love of animals and raises horses, goats, pigs, and chickens.
Dr. Holtzen graduated from California State University in 1989 with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Science. In 1994 he graduated at the top of his class from Temple University in Philadelphia and received his D.M.D. degree. He then completed a surgical internship at the acclaimed Johns Hopkins University Hospital and later a surgical residency at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center. He then served as chief resident at MCP-Hahnemann University Hospitals. Presently, Dr. Holtzen is Board Certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and also by the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology.
Dr. Holtzen has been at the leading edge of new oral and maxillofacial technologies, including computerized skeletal and facial analysis through computer-aided design, “virtual surgery,” an in-office cone beam CAT scan technology. His practice was the first in Nevada to acquire these technologies.
Service to the community, in both a professional and private context, is also of paramount importance to Dr. Holtzen. He has served as an associate professor at the University of Nevada School Of Medicine and the University of Southern Nevada. He also served for many years as a delegate to the Southern Nevada Dental Society. Dr. Holtzen has lectured extensively on topics related to his expertise including orthognathic surgery, dental implants, emergency medicine, and others. He has also always made a point to dedicate a part of his practice to providing free surgical care to children and families in need. He has served in various capacities in the community and served for eight years as chairman of the school board for Hamilton Christian Academy.
Dr. Holtzen strives to make his professional and personal life a reflection of his Christian faith and works to have his caring service to his patients, and the mission of his business, all be a representation of this conviction.
