The Fairfax County Federation of Teachers (FCFT) is seeking a full-time Organizer to work on an organizing campaign based in Northern Virginia. This is a bargaining unit position.
Organizers are responsible for a wide range of external organizing activities, including building strong relationships with workers, developing issue-based organizing plans, recruiting and sustaining organizing committee members and activists, conducting one-on-one conversations with potential members to encourage union membership, and planning and implementing member-to-member outreach campaigns. Union, community, or political organizing experience is preferred.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
This position supports FCFT’s membership growth and leadership development program. Duties include, but are not limited to:
Maintain an assigned turf of FCPS worksites
Conduct ongoing, vigorous membership recruitment and growth efforts in each assigned building
Support education leaders in carrying out their roles on school-site organizational teams
Assist each building in developing and maintaining effective communication networks
Build and sustain relationships with school-based organizational teams
Promote and support FCFT professional learning programs in assigned buildings
Assist with member and non-member engagement in FCFT-led campaigns (e.g., contract, political, and grassroots campaigns)
Collect, enter, and maintain accurate organizing and membership data in databases
Produce regular progress and activity reports
Meet regularly with FCFT staff leadership and follow assigned direction
Maintain consistent visibility with members through scheduled building visits
Establish and maintain positive working relationships with members
Perform other duties as assigned by FCFT
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

Experience working on organizing or advocacy campaigns
Ability to work effectively with diverse populations, personalities, and viewpoints
Valid driver’s license and access to a registered vehicle
Willingness to work extended or irregular hours as required
Professional appearance and demeanor when interacting with members and the public
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
Salary and Benefits
Salary: $60,000 annually
