Your Impact:
The OSP Engineer III performs detailed engineering tasks for outside plant facilities, including estimating, designing, planning, and tracking budgets for copper and fiber cables, poles, direct buried, and conduit systems. This role involves preparing and interpreting engineering plans and reports, designing loop loss and repeater electronics, and conducting field measurements to ensure compliance with industry standards and economic feasibility.
Key responsibilities include developing and managing project budgets, conducting job inspections, and ensuring quality control. The engineer will collect and analyze field data, organize permit packages, maintain accurate records, and process departmental documents.
The OSP Engineer will also design and implement network elements such as Fiber to the Home, Copper DSL, Metro-E Ethernet, TDM, Sonet, and other fiber solutions. This requires collaboration with internal teams, external stakeholders, municipalities, and technical expertise in circuit design, network functionality, and telecom equipment. The position supports cohesive project execution by integrating technical knowledge with practical implementation strategies.
Core Responsibilities:
- Perform detailed engineering tasks for outside plant facilities, including estimating, designing, planning, budgeting, and tracking actual costs against estimates for copper and fiber cables, poles, direct buried, and conduit systems.
- Prepare and interpret engineering plans, drawings, and reports, including loop loss design for load and repeater electronics and field-mounted switch serving areas.
- Conducted job inspections and quality control and ensured compliance with company and industry OSP design standards and economic feasibility studies.
- Collect and organize field data, prepare and submit permit packages, and maintain accurate and accessible files and records.
- Design network elements such as Fiber to the Home, Copper DSL, Metro-E Ethernet, TDM, Sonet, and fiber solutions, ensuring seamless implementation across multiple systems.
- Collaborate with internal teams, retail, wholesale, and municipal entities to develop and execute intra- and inter-state designs and project plans.
- Provide technical guidance on installation, circuit design, and equipment functionality, ensuring a smooth transition from design to implementation.
- Assist engineers with technical tasks, type correspondence and reports, and manage accounting and continuing property records.
- Write project plans, implement solutions, and utilize systems for tracking and troubleshooting telecom networks.
- Facilitate cohesive project execution by working across departments and stakeholders to meet project goals efficiently.
QUALIFICATIONS And REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to identify existing voice/data plant, electric, and other utilities on the site plans as well as in the field
- Ability to indicate existing voice/data plant location and relocate facilities and knowledge of obtaining right of ways and easements where required
- Must have experience managing other OSP Engineers and reviewing/correcting their projects
- Expert in obtaining right of ways and easements where required
- Must be capable of engineering routine and specific COE/OSP work orders, including more complex projects, including road moves
- Must have expert knowledge of COE/OSP principles, work order procedures, voice/data industry standards, PC applications, and COE/OSP record and/or computer-aided drafting systems
- Experience with the local networks
- Ability to perform quality control on engineering work for other members of the team
- Experience/Understanding of the National Electric Safety Code (NESC) for engineering requirements.
Preferred location: Washington West Coast. Ideal candidate lives along the I-5 corridor south of Seattle and North of Olympia in Washington. Towns along the I-5 corridor include Olympia, Lacey, Fort Lewis, Lakewood, Parkland, Tacoma, Edgewood, Auburn, Federal Way, Kent, Renton, and Burien.
Pay Range: $34.00-$36.00 hourly/DOE
