Job Description - Outpatient Retail and Specialty Pharmacy Manager

Job Description Summary

The Outpatient Pharmacy Manager will oversee Southeast Medicine Shop (SMS) and be responsible for the management of all aspects of outpatient pharmacy retail services and transition of care (i.e. Meds to Bed program). Will be responsible for ensuring compliance with all Federal and State laws and regulations as well as providing direction and leadership to pharmacy technicians and pharmacist in Southeast Medicine Shop. The Outpatient Pharmacy Manager, working under the supervision of the Director of Pharmacy, will be expected to lead in the development of future pharmacy service opportunities and accountable for monthly financial reports of all business activity in SMS.


Job Description

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.S. in pharmacy is required, Pharm.D is preferred;
  • Must be currently licensed to practice pharmacy in the State of Alabama;
  • The optimal candidate would also have a degree in business administration;
  • Minimum of Three (3) years, either ambulatory, retail or hospital based pharmacy with a strong focus on outpatient or retail operations and finance.

LANGUAGE/ COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English; proficiency in other languages a plus.
  • Must possess exceptional communication skills both written and verbal; solid writing skills with an ability to write/edit all kinds of copy that clearly articulates the organization’s mission, vision, and values to both internal and external audiences.
  • Must possess strong presentation skills in order to present required data in an accurate and appealing manner.
  • Must possess substantial interpersonal skills with the ability to connect with employees, physicians, and volunteers at all levels of the organization.

SKILLS:

  • Advanced knowledge, skills, and abilities with regard to researching regulations, internal controls for retail pharmacy operations;
  • Exceptional database and spreadsheet knowledge, and use of excel formulas is required;
  • Experience with analyzing and reporting data in order to identify issues, trends, or exceptions to drive improvement of results and find solutions;
  • Possess strong business acumen with a track record of achieving organizational goals with the ability to communicate, influence and drive change across organizational boundaries;
  • Possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity and caring;
  • Ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision and values of Southeast Health.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides oversight and leadership for Southeast Medicine Shop and related programs;
  • Establishes consistent policies and procedures for Southeast Medicine Shop to ensure productivity, efficiency, and safety;
  • Communicates with all staff involved with patient prescriptions to develop, educate, and monitor processes to work in the best interest of the patient and Southeast Health;
  • Routinely monitors industry publications and websites as well as the professional media, literature, and peers to identify opportunities for business growth for the outpatient retail pharmacy;
  • Maintains knowledge of any government policy changes that affect Southeast Medicine Shop, including, but not limited to, HRSA/OPA rules and Medicaid changes;
  • Manages and troubleshoots SMS reimbursement issues and ensures adequate systems checks are reviewed to adjudicate charges with reimbursement;
  • Performs annual evaluations of SMS and transition of care (i.e. Meds to Bed) staff providing coaching as needed, monitoring error reports and productivity of both areas, and is involved in the hiring process;
  • Provides assistance with work schedules for SMS and transition of care (i.e. Meds to Bed), making adjustments for call-ins or flexing as needed;
  • Reviews monthly financial reports for SMS, and is accountable for cost, profitability, revenue, and growth;
  • Evaluates the value of purchased services for contract renewal, and assists in implementing new software packages and other changes in business practices based on changing regulations and policies;
  • Participates in assessing opportunity for growth, assisting in estimation of financial impact and revenue potential for business development related to SMS. Responsible for developing business plans and proforma for new services or expansion;
  • Works closely with other departments, including nursing and case management to facilitate growth of the Meds to bed program;
  • Demonstrates initiative in self-development and education;
  • Serves as a role model for hospital employees in professional behavior and accountability.
