Job Description - Outside Machinist

SUMMARY

Positions open for mechanics, experienced marine/industrial mechanics, and experienced ship yard OSM for repair of large ocean going vessels in a shipyard environment

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES based on position include the following. Other duties may be assigned.Installation and/or repair to pumps, motors, main propulsion and auxiliary generators, propellers and shafting , main bearing, shaft bearings, compressors, hydraulic units and their ancillary components.
Tests all installed or repaired machinery and equipment during dock trials and sea trials. Establishes benchmarks for main propulsion engines and marine gears.
Uses alignment equipment on main shaft and rudder stock lines, stern tube and strut bearing lines.
Perform alignment to installed machinery.
Set up and operate boring bars, portable air drills and grinders Works with minimum supervision
May be assigned miscellaneous tasks outside craft as required

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES May supervise small work groups

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.Ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, job specifications, instruction manuals and manufacturer's handbooks
Must know proper use of required hand tools and special instruments such as dial indicators and micrometers
Possess an understanding of the metric system and ability to convert metric to English and English to metric


EDUCATION and/orEXPERIENCE

One year certificate from college or technical school; three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is frequently required to stand (minimum of two hours while conducting regular work duties), walk, sit, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms; climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl on board ships. The employee will frequently use both hands to grasp rails while climbing, to hold and carry tools and equipment, to operate tools and machinery. The employee must be able to respond to voice or visual commands. The employee must be able to lift 50 pounds on a consistent (daily) basis.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job: wet or humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places; exposure to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold or extreme heat; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The employee must be able to work in confined spaces. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Must comply with Company safety rules and OSHA standards. Must be physically and medically qualified to wear required personal protective equipment as prescribed under OSHA standard
