Essential Functions:
Must safely install, troubleshoot, repair, and remove overhead and underground distribution power lines within the scope of their training
Must safely operate various equipment, including bucket trucks, digger derricks, pickup trucks, excavation equipment, and track equipment
Must know the tools used for line work and how to use, adjust, and calibrate them
Perform the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of overhead electrical power lines and systems
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Follow safety rules and practices, including wearing PPE, setting up work zones, and using grounding techniques
Possess the knowledge and competence required to perform hot-stick work
Demonstrate an aptitude for learning the duties required of a lineman
Know the proper methods for handling, storing, and transporting conduit, wire, pipe, and other materials
Know the proper methods for safely splicing conduit and installing pipe and wire into enclosures
Understand lockout/tagout procedures; be able to read and understand prints for the systems being worked on; and understand electrical safety and how electricity works
Understand the operation of support equipment, including digging equipment, vacuum units, and reel trailers; know the tools used for line work and how to use, adjust, and calibrate them
Understand transformer safety and transformer components; understand the different types of electrical equipment used in a system, including handholes, pedestals, pull-through cabinets, and switchgear
Know proper cable-pulling procedures; understand and demonstrate proper methods for determining whether a line is energized; know the appropriate materials for making terminations and proper crimping standards; and understand and demonstrate proper methods and standards for making secondary terminations, building an elbow, installing secondary cables, and splicing primary cable
Qualifications:
Able to drive support vehicles; a Class A CDL is preferred
Able to work safely while performing new construction, maintenance, or repair work on de-energized conductors
Demonstrate proficiency in all methods of cable pulling and installation and the ability to properly splice and terminate underground feeders using heat-shrink splices, primary and secondary conductor terminations, and similar terminations for underground facilities such as vaults, riser poles, and various types of switchgear
Must be able to safely troubleshoot, locate, test, de-energize, ground, and repair underground cables and re-energize equipment after repairs are completed
Must have knowledge of related construction specifications and applicable OSHA regulations, including those for trenching, excavation, and confined spaces
Repair or replace pad-mounted equipment, including switch cabinets and single- and three-phase pad-mounted transformers
Understand distribution voltages on a circuit and be able to read blueprints
Be capable of performing basic manhole and bucket rescue and escape procedures; training will be provided
Demonstrate proficiency with appropriate operating tools and equipment, such as a Dynatel fault finder, Von Thumper, and Von First Response Unit, and with vehicles such as a backhoe and digger derrick
Minimum Requirements:
Able to obtain a commercial learner’s permit within 90 days of employment
Able to travel long distances on short notice when required
Able to work for extended periods in various locations when required
