Job Description - Overnight Camp Lead Counselor

About the Role

As a Lead Overnight Counselor, you are the heartbeat of our nighttime safety and the reason our summer programs can thrive. By leading a team of dedicated counselors and maintaining an "awake status," you ensure our campers with disabilities remain safe, supported, and ready for another day of adventure.

This role is mission-critical: your leadership provides the 24/7 care and family peace of mind that make SOAR365's life-changing camp experiences possible. You aren't just supervising a shift-you're protecting the dreams and independence of every camper in our care.

Who We Are: SOAR365

For more than 70 years, SOAR365 has been dedicated to supporting individuals and families living with disabilities. Our innovative programs and compassionate services are thoughtfully designed to meet real-world needs at every stage of life. Today, SOAR365 has a profound impact on more than 2,000 people and their families across the Greater Richmond area. Whether through employment, therapy, respite, or recreation, we're proud to help people of all abilities thrive.

We are also proud to be recognized as an Employer of Choice, offering competitive benefits, professional development opportunities, and a supportive environment where employees feel valued, empowered, and connected to meaningful work.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

In this role, you are responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of campers with disabilities during nighttime hours. By maintaining an active "awake status," you provide direct supervision, assist with personal hygiene, and use positive behavioral supports to help participants sleep safely. Your role is central to Camp Baker's operations, requiring you to lead overnight staff, alert support teams when needed, and maintain accurate documentation such as incident reports and behavioral logs. Additionally, you uphold SOAR365's high standards of care by ensuring compliance with HIPAA and safety policies while participating in all required professional training and staff meetings.

Requirements & Qualifications

Qualified candidates will have a strong background in supporting individuals with developmental disabilities within a center-based or residential camp setting. The role requires the ability to monitor both individuals and groups effectively, apply positive behavioral supports, and direct the work of others when assistance is needed. Physically, the candidate must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Academically, one to two years of college is preferred, ideally with a focus on special education, recreation, or therapy.

Training & Schedule

Required Paid Training:

  • Dates: May 25, 2026 – June 5, 2026

  • Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Regular Summer Schedule:
Once training is complete, your typical shift will run from 8:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. You can expect to work 3 to 4 nights per week (Sunday through Thursday), totaling approximately 35–45 hours weekly.

Total Rewards & Benefits

Our market-competitive total rewards package includes:

  • Immediate access to your paycheck through ZayZoon

  • 403(b) retirement plan

  • Employee development and training programs

  • Wellness programs

  • Discounted tuition to South University
