Job Description - Overnight Youth Care Worker

Description

  

Position Summary Primary responsibilities include assisting team members with overall operations of shelter facility and responsible for the direct care, behavior management and supervision to shelter residents, ages 5-17. This includes monitoring personal hygiene, health, medication administration, client intakes and discharges, meal preparation, kitchen clean-up and maintenance, assistance with the planning and facilitation of daily cultural & physical activities to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our youth. 

SALARY: DOE. HOURS: FT. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday hours are from 11:00 pm to 7:00 am., F Agency Holiday Overnights. May be asked to occasionally work other shifts. Flexibility required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the following satisfactorily; other duties may be assigned. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Directly responsible to the Shelter Coordinator and the Residential & Clinical Director.
  • Provide direct care, behavior management, supervision of shelter residents to ensure health and safety of everyone. This includes monitoring personal hygiene, health, medication administration, behavioral/emotional status and provide conflict resolution/counseling between residents if needed.
  • Prepare healthy nutritious meals and snacks for shelter residents in accordance with shelter menu. 
  • Must maintain a sanitary environment by performing light maintenance duties and delegating such duties/chores to residents and other staff. Ensure that the kitchen is clean with dishes done by the end of the shift.
  • Help facilitate daily engaging, interactive activities and groups of a recreational, cultural or educational nature in accordance with weekly schedule. This may include house meetings and support groups in accordance with the daily schedule.
  • Provide case management support as needed by providing transportation, documentation in appropriate logs and files, complete client Intakes and discharges. This includes cleaning the resident’s room, obtaining resident’s evaluation, labeling and storing belongings.
  • Plan and facilitate daily engaging, interactive activities and groups of a recreational, cultural or educational nature, in accordance with weekly schedule.
  • Supervise parental visits.
  • Provide emotional support to shelter residents and their families.
  • Must work in conjunction with other Youth Care Workers by enforcing program policies and procedures, provide emotional support to shelter residents and their families and screen crisis referrals. Network with other staff before, during and/or after weekend duty regarding the progress and status of residents.
  • Provide transportation to shelter residents.
  • Perform telephone coverage, screen referrals and provide information to residents and community.
  • Attending weekly case management meetings.

Requirements

  

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability require.

Education/Experience:

  • AA degree in human services, child development, elementary/secondary education or related field is preferred.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience working with youth who exhibit varying degrees of difficult behavior in a residential, therapeutic, group or classroom setting preferred. Candidates must be knowledgeable of the Native American Indian culture, values, and family systems.
  • Must have the ability to work constructively with children and youth who exhibit varying degrees of difficult behaviors.
  • Must demonstrate and promote a chemically healthy lifestyle.
  • Must be knowledgeable of traditional Indian child-rearing methods, culture, values and family systems.
  • Must be cognizant of and sensitive to the special needs/issues of American Indian children in out-of-home placement.
  • Must have sufficient physical strength and ability to independently and repeatedly lift, move, and carry objects weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds, such as a vacuum cleaner, mop bucket w/water, and industrial cooking pots and pans.
  • Must have the ability to stand/walk up three (3) flights of stairs repeatedly.
  • Must have the ability to bend/squat/twist/reach constantly when emptying trash, dusting, sweeping floors, mopping floors, vacuuming, and occasionally shoveling snow.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and pass MN DHS background study.
