About the Role

The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is seeking a skilled and dependable Painter to maintain the appearance, safety, and integrity of campus buildings and facilities across the organization. This position is responsible for performing professional painting, surface preparation, drywall finishing, plastering, and related maintenance activities for educational, residential, administrative, and support facilities. The Painter plays an essential role in preserving AIDB's facilities while ensuring all work is completed in accordance with industry standards, safety regulations, and institutional expectations.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent craftsmanship, attention to detail, the ability to work independently, and a commitment to providing exceptional service in support of AIDB's mission.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Basic Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or GED required. 
  • Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of professional painting experience. 
  • Licensure & Insurance: Valid Driver License with the ability to meet and maintain eligibility for coverage under the AIDB vehicle insurance program. Driving accommodations may be made for applicants with an exceptionality.
  • Must meet suitability requirements for employment.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Institutional Experience: Experience in commercial, institutional, educational, healthcare, or government facilities maintenance. 
  • Specialized Coatings: Experience working with specialty coatings and protective finishes. 
  • Systems & Trades: Experience using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and a basic knowledge of other building maintenance trades. 


POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Surface Preparation & Painting Operations

  • Independent Execution: Ability to perform assigned duties independently without close supervision and follow written and verbal instructions. 
  • Organizational Skills: Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple assignments, maintain inventory, and manage purchasing records. 
  • Surface Painting: Paint interior and exterior surfaces including drywall, plaster, concrete, masonry, metal, wood, brick, ceilings, trim, doors, cabinets, and structural components. 
  • Preparation & Finishing: Prepare surfaces by scraping, sanding, washing, patching, filling, caulking, priming, and repairing damaged areas. 
  • Drywall & Plaster Repair: Finish drywall by taping, floating, sanding, and texturing; perform plaster repair and restoration on interior and exterior walls. 
  • Coating Application: Apply primers, sealers, stains, varnishes, enamels, epoxies, specialty coatings, and protective finishes appropriate for each surface. 
  • Color Matching & Mixing: Mix paints to achieve proper color consistency, texture, and durability, and match existing paint colors and finishes when completing repairs. 
  • Removal Activities: Remove old paint, wallpaper, adhesives, and deteriorated finishes using appropriate methods and equipment. 
  • Technical Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of commercial and institutional painting methods, equipment, materials, construction finishes, and industry practices. 
  • Equipment Operation: Demonstrated experience operating power spray equipment and maintaining painting equipment. 


Equipment, Inventory & Maintenance Support

  • Equipment Operation & Care: Safely operate brushes, rollers, spray guns, pressure sprayers, sanders, grinders, scaffolding, ladders, and lifts; perform routine maintenance on tools and equipment. 
  • Quality & Inventory Control: Inspect completed work to ensure quality standards are met; maintain inventory of paints, coatings, tools, and supplies. 
  • Purchasing & Environmental Safety: Purchase paint and supplies following departmental procedures, maintain clean work areas, and dispose of paints and hazardous materials per environmental regulations. 
  • Scheduling & Support: Coordinate painting schedules to minimize operational disruption, assist with minor related building maintenance, respond promptly to work requests, and assist Physical Plant personnel during emergencies, events, or special projects. 


Safety Responsibilities

  • OSHA Compliance: Follow all Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards and AIDB safety policies. 
  • PPE & Equipment Safety: Properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE) and safely operate ladders, scaffolding, aerial lifts, and power spray equipment. 
  • Hazard & Material Safety: Identify and report unsafe work conditions immediately; safely handle and store paints, solvents, chemicals, and combustible materials. 
  • Cleanliness & Training: Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area at all times and participate in required safety training and emergency preparedness activities. 
  • Safety Awareness: Solid knowledge of safe work practices, hazard prevention, and proper application of finishes using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment. 


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The Painter position requires the ability to perform physically demanding work, including:

  • Frequently climbing ladders, scaffolding, and elevated work platforms, and working at heights safely and comfortably. 
  • Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling materials weighing up to 75 pounds. 
  • Standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and reaching for extended periods. 
  • Operating hand tools, power equipment, and working indoors/outdoors in varying weather conditions. 
  • Working around paint fumes, dust, chemicals, and construction materials while using proper protective equipment. 


Professional Development and Certifications

  • Sign Language Proficiency: Ability to obtain a Survival level of sign language proficiency under the AIDB Sign Language Evaluation System within thirty (30) months of employment. 
  • Facilities Maintenance: Maintain all AIDB buildings in a professional, safe, aesthetically pleasing, and attractive condition.

SALARY:      $19.91 - $23.93 per hour          Scale C5      Rank 42
