Work Schedule

24 Hours On / 72 Hours Off (24/72 Schedule)

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Overtime Eligible)

Compensation Package

The compensation listed below is based on a full schedule of regularly worked hours. Actual earnings may vary depending on hours worked.

Paramedic

Starting Annual Salary: $74,700
(Based on a 24/72 schedule and an average 42-hour workweek.)

Longevity Pay

In addition to base salary, employees receive the following longevity increases:

  • 3% after 1 year of service 
  • 6% after 2 years of service 
  • 9% after 3 years of service 
  • 1% additional increase for each year thereafter 

Prior Service Credit

Credit for prior full-time public service may be granted for longevity pay and vacation leave purposes, up to a maximum of five (5) years. Eligible service must have been with an agency participating in the County Employees Retirement System (CERS) or another approved state-sponsored public retirement system, as determined by the employer and in accordance with applicable policy.

Example:
An employee with two (2) years of qualifying service at a CERS-participating EMS agency would receive:

  • Base Salary: $74,700 
  • Longevity Pay (6%): $4,482 

Total Annual Compensation: $79,182

EMT-B

Starting Annual Salary: $56,289
(Based on a 24/72 schedule and an average 42-hour workweek.)

Longevity Pay

In addition to base salary, employees receive the following longevity increases:

  • 3% after 1 year of service 
  • 6% after 2 years of service 
  • 9% after 3 years of service 
  • 1% additional increase for each year thereafter

Additional Information

  • Qualified applicants may receive credit for prior full-time public service for longevity and vacation leave purposes, up to five (5) years, subject to policy requirements.

Requirements

 

Minimum Qualifications


General Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be legally authorized to work in the United States. 
  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age. 
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent. 
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license. 
  • Successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation, including: 
    • Criminal history check 
    • Driving record review 
    • Employment and reference verification 
  • Meet the physical and medical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform the essential functions of the position. 
  • Successfully complete post-offer medical, psychological, and drug screenings as a condition of employment. 
  • Obtain NIMS IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, and IS-800 certifications within sixty (60) days of employment. 

EMT-B (Emergency Medical Technician – Basic)

Applicants must possess and maintain:

  • Current Kentucky EMT certification/licensure. 
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) CPR certification. 
  • Bloodborne Pathogens certification. 
  • Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma (P.H.A.T.) certification. 

EMT-P (Paramedic)

In addition to meeting all EMT-B requirements, applicants must possess and maintain:

  • Current Kentucky Paramedic certification/licensure. 
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification. 
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous EMS experience. 
  • Prior service with a Kentucky CERS-participating agency or other approved public retirement system. 
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and customer service skills. 
  • Experience operating within a 911 emergency response system.
