Position Summary:
The Parent Educator in the Parents as Teachers (PAT) program provides personalized home visits and group sessions to educate and support parents on child development and effective parenting. They facilitate positive parent-child interactions, assess developmental needs, set goals, and connect families with additional resources. The role includes staying up to date on best practices, maintaining accurate records, and preparing reports for program evaluation.
Key Responsibilities:
Parent Education Workshops: Develop, plan, and facilitate culturally responsive parenting workshops, classes, and support groups on topics such as child development, effective parenting strategies, navigating the school system, and community resources.
Individualized Support: Provide one-on-one coaching and support to parents and caregivers to address their specific needs, challenges, and goals related to parenting and family life.
Community Outreach: Conduct outreach efforts to engage BIPOC and low-income families in Central Minnesota, build trust, and encourage participation in CAIRO’s programs and services.
Resource Coordination: Connect families with local resources, such as childcare, healthcare, housing, and educational services, and assist in navigating available community services.
Cultural Competency Advocacy: Serve as a bridge between families and local schools or community organizations, advocating for the needs and interests of BIPOC and immigrant families.
Data Collection and Reporting: Collect and maintain accurate records of program participation, progress, and outcomes. Prepare regular reports for program evaluation and funding purposes
Collaboration and Partnership: Work closely with other CAIRO team members, local schools, community organizations, and stakeholders to enhance program offerings and reach more families.
Program Development: Contribute to the continuous development and improvement of CAIRO’s parent education programs by incorporating feedback, staying informed on best practices, and adapting to community needs.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in education, Social Work, Family Studies, Psychology, or a related field. A master’s degree is a plus.
Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in parent education, community outreach, social services, or a related field, with a focus on BIPOC and low-income populations.
Cultural Competency: Strong understanding of and sensitivity to the cultural, social, and economic issues impacting immigrant and refugee families in Central Minnesota.
Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to facilitate group discussions and provide individual coaching in an engaging and supportive manner.
Language Skills: Bilingual or multilingual skills (Somali, Arabic and Oromo, languages spoken by local immigrant communities) are highly desirable.
Interpersonal Skills: Strong relationship-building skills, with the ability to establish trust and rapport with diverse populations.
Flexibility: Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to meet the needs of families.
Transportation: Must have reliable transportation to travel within Central Minnesota.

Essential Functions:
1. Building Trusting Relationships
Establishing and maintaining trusting, respectful relationships with parents and caregivers.
Creating a safe, welcoming environment that values the family's cultural background and individual experiences.
2. Conducting Personal Visits
Delivering personalized home visits that align with the PAT model to support the unique needs of each family.
Focusing on strengthening parent-child interaction, enhancing development-centered parenting, and improving family well-being.
3. Assessment and Screening
Administering developmental, health, hearing, and vision screenings for children to identify needs early on.
Utilizing culturally appropriate tools to assess family strengths, needs, and goals.
4. Providing Culturally Relevant Resources
Offering culturally appropriate parenting information, resources, and tools to support the diverse needs of BIPOC and low-income families.
Adapting materials and strategies to meet language preferences and cultural practices.
5. Facilitating Group Connections
Organizing group sessions to foster community building, mutual support, and shared learning among families.
Addressing topics that are culturally relevant and responsive to the community's needs and interests.
6. Empowerment and Advocacy
Empowering parents by providing education, skills, and tools to advocate for their children's needs within educational and community settings.
Connecting families to community resources and services, such as healthcare, housing, and food security programs.
7. Data Collection and Reporting
Collecting and maintaining accurate records of family progress, home visits, screenings, and other relevant data to ensure compliance with PAT standards and reporting requirements.
Using data to inform and adapt service delivery to better meet family needs.
8. Professional Development
Participating in ongoing training and professional development to stay current with PAT guidelines and best practices for working with diverse and underserved populations.
Engaging in reflective practice to continually improve service delivery and cultural competency.
9. Collaboration and Partnership
Working collaboratively with schools, community organizations, and other service providers to create a network of support for families.
Facilitating referrals to external services and programs when additional support is needed.
10. Maintaining Flexibility and Adaptability
Adjusting service delivery methods to meet the varied needs of families, such as offering virtual visits, adjusting visit schedules, or providing additional support as needed.
Being responsive to changing family circumstances and community dynamics.
