General Statement of Duties

Performs responsible work assisting customers at the Lake Thom-A-Lex bait shop.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

An employee in this class is responsible for the operations of the bait shop.  Work includes selling merchandise, collecting money, assisting customers and answering general questions from the public.  This position is seasonal that will work approximately April-September and is a variable work schedule which includes nights, weekends and holidays.  Employee works under the regular supervision of the Lake Warden and Assistant Lake Warden.

Illustrative Examples of Work

• Answers telephone and assists customers filling out permits and shows them where to place their permit and money.

• Provides assistance and information to customers and the general public.

• Will be responsible for shelter reservations, online as well as in person.

• Monitors the area surrounding the bait shop to prevent adults, kids and dogs from wading or swimming in the reservoir. 

• Sells merchandise in the bait shop, collects monies and issues receipts.

• Balances cash tills and totals monies for the Lake Warden to deposit.   

• Maintains the cleanliness of the bait shop and surrounding areas. 

• Notifies the Lake Warden of needed supplies and stock.

• Maintains the proper temperature and cleanliness of the minnow tank; assists customers with their minnow purchases.

• Packages chicken livers for resell.

• Maintains the cleanliness, food and water in the cricket box; assists customers with their cricket purchases.

• Stocks merchandise to be sold in the bait shop and submits orders for supplies to the Recreation Staff.

• Makes notation of suggestions or concerns from the public for the park facilities.

• May also open or close the bait shop and park facilities in the absence of the Lake Warden or Assistant.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Ability to operate a cash register, handle monies and reconcile the till for deposit.

• Ability to work well with the public and other staff.

• Must possess good communication skills.

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational support functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.

• Must be able to perform sedentary work lifting and exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

• Employee must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures and determine the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned. 

• Worker is subject to inside environmental conditions:  protection from weather conditions but not necessarily form temperature changes.

• Worker may be subject to outside environmental conditions, as needed.

Education and Experience

• Graduation from high school and some experience working with the public.

Licenses and Certifications

• Valid North Carolina Driver License.
