Job Description - Park Specialist (PCN 10-5214)

**Classification Study Notice**

What You Will Be Doing
The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation, is recruiting for an eight-month seasonal Park Specialist position. Alaska State Parks is the largest state park system in the country, with 156 park units totaling over 3.4 million acres of public land and water.

The Park Specialist manages the daily park and facility operations in park areas of responsibility, including the trail systems, trailheads, campgrounds, public-use cabins, picnic pavilions, outhouses, docks, fishing platforms, fee stations, and more.

The Park Specialist is responsible for the supervision, training, and direction of seasonal trail crew employees and volunteers who clean and maintain campgrounds, cabins, outhouses, trails, and other related facilities.

The position assists with all facets of park operations, including maintenance, public safety, recreation, and resource management.

The Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation provides outdoor recreation opportunities and conserves and interprets natural, cultural, and historic resources for the use, enjoyment, and welfare of the people.

Core Responsibilities
This Park Specialist will help manage over 30 miles of trail, dozens of trail structures, over a dozen trailheads, 10 Public Use Cabins, 8 picnic sites, and 3 campgrounds in 8 different state park units. Nine of the ten public-use cabins and twenty miles of trail that are accessible only by boat or float plane.

This position will identify hazards, maintenance, and repair needs and take corrective actions.

Work will include trail clearing, brushing, trail bridge repair, sign replacement, cabin repairs, carpentry, painting, and more.

Park Specialist is responsible for recruiting, training, leading, and directing the work of seasonal trail crew employees as well as long-term and short-term volunteers, such as camp hosts, backcountry volunteers, and one-day volunteer group events.

Work will require the operation of ocean-going boats, ATVs, UTVs, chainsaws, brush cutters, generators, power tools, and more.

The Working Environment You Can Expect
This position is based in Kodiak.

Work will occur outdoors in Kodiak Road system park units: Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park, Buskin River State Recreation Site, and Pasagshak River State Recreation Site, as well as remote park units: Shuyak Island State Park, Afognak Island State Park, and Woody Island State Recreation Site.

Traveling in float planes and operating ocean-going boats (training provided) to travel and work in remote park units is required.

Backcountry work lasting from a few days to several weeks at a time will be required; backcountry accommodations will typically be a dry cabin or the Big Bay Ranger Station on Shuyak Island State Park.

Training and certification with bear deterrents and shotguns for wildlife protection are required.

Opportunities for temporary duty in Dillingham at Wood-Tikchik State Park may arise.

The knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies needed to be successful in this position include:

Skills to effectively lead and supervise field work in front and backcountry.
Ability and experience prioritizing workloads, duties, responsibilities, and projects for yourself and others in a natural resource management setting.
Experience with trail work, groundskeeping, and basic carpentry.
Experience operating and maintaining small power boats, ATVs, chainsaws, and other small gas-powered equipment.
Experience and ability to interact professionally with the public and provide excellent customer service.
A valid Alaska Driver's license is required at the time of appointment.
AND EITHER:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college.
OR
Two years of journey level technical experience in natural resource management. The required experience includes work such as a Natural Resource Technician 2, Forest Technician 3, or Fish & Wildlife Technician 3 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
OR
Two years of college education from an accredited institution (48 semester hours or 72 quarter hours equal two years) AND one year of journey technical experience in natural resource management. The required experience includes work such as a Natural Resource Technician 2, Forest Technician 3, or Fish & Wildlife Technician 3 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

Special Note:
Some positions may be seasonal, and require evening and/or weekend work. Travel to remote locations by small plane or boat may be required. Positions may have access to arms and ammunition; in those cases applicants will be subject to restrictions for past criminal convictions.

SPECIAL NOTICES

This position will require frequent backcountry trips of up to one week at a time to Afognak Island State Park and several weeks at a time to Shuyak Island State Park (Big Bay Ranger Station).
This position may require you to travel to Dillingham once a year for up to 10 days per trip.
