The Dialysis Patient Care Technician (PCT) is responsible for providing direct patient care under the supervision of the registered nurse or the Clinical Coordinator in a dialysis facility. The PCT ensures safe, effective, and compassionate treatment for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), while maintaining compliance with all regulatory and facility standards. The incumbent must also communicate effectively with all staff and providers in planning for process improvement using tact, discretion, and diplomacy.
The PCT-I is responsible for direct patient care, which includes the performance of basic hemodialysis techniques and procedures, daily patient care, and observations.
Please Note:
This position is PRN for a Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday schedule. TTS consistent schedule availability is required during the introductory period of employment. Opportunity to transition into a full-time position after successful completion of training and introductory period.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Prepare dialysis equipment and supplies for each treatment session.
2. Perform pre-treatment, intra-treatment, and post-treatment patient care activities, including vital signs, weight, and access site preparation.
3. Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments under appropriate supervision.
4. Monitor and document patient responses to treatment, reporting any changes or concerns to the nurse.
5. Maintain and disinfect dialysis machines and equipment according to facility protocols.
6. Assist with emergency procedures and respond promptly to alarms or patient distress.
7. Ensure accurate and timely documentation of treatment data and patient observations.
8. Support patients with mobility, hygiene, and comfort during treatment sessions.
9. Follow infection control and safety procedures, including proper use of PPE and hand hygiene.
10. Maintain a clean and organized treatment area.
11. Participate in ongoing training and education to maintain competency and certification.
12. Provide emotional support and respectful communication to patients and families.
13. Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to ensure high-quality patient care.
14. Obtain all prescribed laboratory testing and prepare specimens for collection
15. Perform water and equipment safety checks and communicate abnormal results to the Staff Nurse, Clinical Coordinator, or Facility Administrator.
16. Attend scheduled staff meetings; assist in patient care plan meetings when appropriate.
17. Maintain knowledge of the latest developments in dialysis techniques and serve as a resource for teammates as appropriate.
18. Additional duties as assigned.
Regulatory Compliance:
· High school diploma or GED required.· Completion of formal dialysis training program required.· CMS-recognized Dialysis Technician certification required within 18 months of hire.· Current CPR certification is required.· Minimum 6 months of experience in a healthcare setting; dialysis experience preferred.· Strong attention to detail, communication skills, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.· Must meet all state and federal requirements for dialysis technician certification. Computer literacy with the ability to navigate through common operating systems, such as Microsoft Office products. · Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays.· Good documentation skills, knowledge of work order-based equipment maintenance database helpful.· Knowledge of healthcare operations, infection control requirements, and medical equipment terminology desired.
