FSLA: Full-Time 


Location: Hybrid in Woodland Hills, CA

Job Summary
As a Patient Financial Counselor, you’ll be a critical part of our care team. Your role goes beyond billing—you're a financial advocate who supports patients during one of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. You will work with empathy, clarity, and precision to help patients navigate complex healthcare costs, create manageable payment plans, and access financial assistance—all while building trust and making care more accessible.



Key Responsibilities


Financial Counseling & Patient Advocacy



  • Conduct detailed financial assessments to verify insurance eligibility, determine benefits, and identify aid opportunities

  • Clearly explain insurance coverage, out-of-pocket costs, and available options with compassion and transparency

  • Create customized payment plans that align with patients’ financial situations and recovery journeys

  • Assist patients in completing financial hardship documentation and apply poverty guidelines to determine forgiveness eligibility

  • Guide patients through assistance programs and community funding resources

  • Maintain regular follow-ups to accommodate changes in patients' financial status


Billing Operations & Documentation



  • Process payments securely using various methods (credit card, cash, check, electronic)

  • Review and resolve billing discrepancies and ensure accurate patient statements

  • Read and interpret EOBs (Explanation of Benefits), VOBs (Verification of Benefits), and insurance documentation

  • Maintain thorough records of all financial conversations and payment activities

  • Monitor past-due balances and provide timely follow-up



Qualifications


Education & Experience



  • 2–3 years of experience in healthcare revenue cycle management; behavioral health experience is a strong plus

  • Knowledge of medical insurance, patient billing, and payment practices

  • Familiarity with substance use disorder regulations and coverage

  • Experience with CollaborateMD (preferred, not required)


Technical Skills



  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and healthcare financial systems

  • Ability to interpret complex insurance and medical billing documentation

  • Understanding of public/private aid sources for addiction treatment

  • Experience with Salesforce


Interpersonal Skills



  • Excellent communication and listening abilities

  • High emotional intelligence and resilience in emotionally charged conversations

  • A strong sense of compassion, integrity, and discretion in handling confidential information

  • Problem-solving mindset with a commitment to service excellence



Work Environment



  • Full-time, in-office role within a dynamic healthcare setting

  • Requires occasional evening availability based on patient needs
