Job Description - Payroll Specialist


Payroll Specialist


evolvedMD is a growing healthcare organization committed to improving access to high-quality care across the country. With fewer than 300 employees today and operations in seven states (with continued expansion planned), we are building scalable, compliant, and people-centered systems to support our growth.


The Payroll Specialist will play a critical role in ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant payroll operations for a multi-state workforce. This role will own end-to-end payroll processing while also supporting back-end benefits administration and partnering closely with Accounting on payroll tax filings and audits. The Payroll Specialist will sit on the People / HR Team and report to the VP, People.


The ideal candidate brings strong multi-state payroll experience, deep knowledge of payroll laws and best practices, and a collaborative mindset suited for a growing organization.


Location: This position will be in-person based out of evolvedMD’s corporate headquarters in Scottsdale, AZ


Compensation



  • First-year compensation $65,000 to $85,000 annually (DOE) 

  • Bonuses driven by self-care, professional development, and individual KPIs

  • $1,200 annual technology allowance

  • 401(k) company match up to 3%


Key Responsibilities


Payroll Operations



  • Process full-cycle, multi-state payroll for a growing organization of fewer than 300 employees

  • Ensure accurate calculation of wages, overtime, bonuses, deductions, and withholdings

  • Maintain payroll records in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations

  • Administer off-cycle payrolls as needed (bonuses, corrections, terminations, etc.)

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for payroll-related employee inquiries


Compliance, Tax, and Audit Support



  • Maintain strong knowledge of payroll laws, regulations, and best practices across multiple states

  • Partner with Accounting on payroll tax filings, reconciliations, and audits (including benefits & 401k)

  • Conduct Labor Allocation audits and ensure data accuracy

  • Support internal and external payroll-related audits

  • Assist with payroll compliance as the company expands into new states


Benefits & Back-End Administration



  • Support benefits and 401k administration from a payroll perspective, including:

    • Payroll deductions and reconciliations

    • Carrier file reviews

    • Benefits-related reporting and audits



  • Collaborate with People / HR and Accounting to ensure payroll and benefits data alignment


Systems & Process Improvement



  • Utilize payroll systems efficiently; experience with UKG is strongly preferred

  • Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes, controls, and documentation

  • Support scalability and process improvements as the company grows


Qualifications




  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on payroll experience

  • Experience running multi-state or national payroll

  • Strong knowledge of payroll laws, compliance requirements, and best practices

  • High attention to detail with strong organizational and time-management skills

  • Ability to collaborate cross-functionally with Accounting and People / HR teams

  • Strong problem-solving skills and discretion with confidential information


Preferred



  • Experience with UKG and other major Payroll/HRIS systems

  • Experience supporting payroll in a growing or scaling organization

  • Healthcare or multi-state professional services experience a plus
