Salary: 16.61 Hourly

Our school and community-based therapy, prevention and leadership development programs support young people to individually and collectively address causes of substance abuse, grief and trauma while building social-emotional, career and social change skills. In addition to working directly with young people, we train, coach and advocate for youth-serving institutions like Chicago Public Schools to be restorative and trauma-informed.

Position Overview

A Peace Ambassador facilitates restorative practices and promotes the shift from punitive to restorative approaches. This work involves ongoing placement in a community-based organization or school as well as more short-term projects and one-off public awareness events. The Peace Ambassador will regularly document and share progress towards objectives and receive ongoing assessment, training and coaching to develop skills to be an effective professional RJ practitioner. 

Responsibilities

Perform the following from a racial, gender, sexuality, and ability equity lens:

  • Facilitate restorative practices for school and community-based organization staff, youth, and community stakeholders.
  • Assist RJ Specialist in conducting school-wide/agency-wide RJ assessments.
  • Participate in meetings and trainings for own on-going development in Restorative Practices and workforce development skills.
  • Timely completion and submission of all paperwork, including, but not limited to, timesheets and documentation of all interactions with youth and adults.
  • Meet weekly with the Supervisor to assess progress and with the Case Manager to discuss additional resources and support needed.
  • Collaborate with RJ Specialist to develop ideas for improving assigned programs, including researching and adapting existing and new activities.
  • Represent Alternatives, Inc. at relevant forums, funder meetings and community events.
  • Actively participate in all applicable staff and team meetings, professional development training and supervision meetings.
  • Represent Alternatives at relevant forums and events as assigned. 
  • Participate in Alternatives’ fundraising initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  1. Successful completion of 20 hours of intensive restorative justice practices training from Alternatives
  2. Commitment to a growth mindset and on-going development of restorative practice 
  3. Professionalism in the areas of punctuality, documentation, organization, and phone/email responsiveness
  4. Consistently learning and working within the following frameworks: Anti-oppression, Positive Youth Development, Trauma-informed and Balanced and Restorative Justice.
  5. Skilled at working with young people at high risk for juvenile justice and child welfare system involvement
  6. The COVID vaccine is mandatory for all employees to the full extent permissible under applicable law
