Penalty Box / Game Operations Worker

The Penalty Box / Game Operations Worker assists with the successful operation of hockey games, tournaments, and other events at the Breezy Point Sports Center. This position may be responsible for penalty box operations, scoreboard and game clock operation, tracking game statistics, public-address announcing, and operating arena lighting, music, and sound systems.

This position requires strong attention to detail, dependability, professionalism, and the ability to remain focused in a fast-paced game environment. Employees must work cooperatively with referees, coaches, players, Sports Center staff, and other game officials.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities may vary depending on the event and assigned position and may include:

• Operate the game clock and scoreboard, including game time, periods, penalties, scores, and other required information.
• Staff the home or visitor  penalty box and accurately track penalty times.
• Open and close penalty box doors at the appropriate times and communicate with game officials as necessary.
• Record and maintain game  statistics, including goals, assists, penalties, shots, and other statistics as assigned.
• Complete or assist with official score sheets and game records.
• Serve as the public-address  announcer, including announcing goals, assists, penalties, starting lineups, game information, and other approved announcements.
• Operate arena music, sound  effects, microphones, and audio equipment.
• Operate assigned arena lighting and game-presentation systems before, during, and after games.
• Coordinate music, lighting,  announcements, and sound effects with game action and event schedules.
• Follow referee signals and  directions to ensure the scoreboard, penalty clock, and game records are  accurate.
• Communicate professionally with referees, coaches, players, visiting teams, spectators, and Sports Center staff.
• Arrive early enough to prepare  and test assigned equipment before the scheduled game or event.
• Report equipment problems,  scoreboard issues, discrepancies, or unusual incidents to the appropriate supervisor.
• Keep the penalty box,  scorekeeper's area, press box, and other assigned work areas clean and organized.
• Follow Breezy Point Resort and  Sports Center policies, safety procedures, and event rules.
• Maintain professional and impartial conduct during games, regardless of the teams participating.
• Perform other Sports Center and  game-day duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The successful employee should be able to:

• Understand basic hockey rules,  terminology, penalties, and game procedures or be willing to learn.
• Accurately follow referee signals and instructions.
• Operate scoreboard, timing,  microphone, sound, lighting, and related arena equipment after training.
• Pay close attention to game  action for extended periods.
• Perform basic math and accurately track time.
• Communicate clearly and  professionally over a public-address system.
• Remain calm and professional  during fast-paced or high-pressure situations.
• Work independently while also   functioning as part of the game-operations team.
• Maintain appropriate neutrality  and professionalism when interacting with teams and officials.
• Follow verbal and written  instructions.
• Demonstrate reliable attendance  and punctuality.

Qualifications

• Previous hockey, sports,  scoreboard, scorekeeping, announcing, or event experience is helpful but not required.
• Basic knowledge of hockey is  preferred.
• Must be willing and able to learn Sports Center equipment and game-day procedures.
• Must be dependable and available  for scheduled games and events.
• Must meet all applicable age requirements for assigned duties and equipment.
