Requirements:          

The Drumline Instructor and Coach is responsible for developing the musical and marching skills of the marching band’s drumline. This includes writing or coordinating percussion parts, specialty warm-ups, leading rehearsals, teaching technique, and supervising students during all performances. The instructor works in coordination with the band director and staff to ensure the drumline is integrated musically and visually with the full ensemble.

Responsibilities:

• Teach and reinforce percussion technique (snare, tenor, bass drum, cymbals) appropriate to the group’s skill level.
  
  


• Design, write, or arrange percussion parts that complement the full marching show.
  
  


• Lead sectionals, full drumline rehearsals, and coordinate with visual staff to integrate movement and music.
  
  


• Provide individual and group feedback to improve performance and musicianship.
  
  


• Assist in student auditions and instrument assignments.
  
  


• Supervise and mentor students during rehearsals, performances, and travel.
  
  


• Maintain and care for percussion equipment and ensure proper use and storage.
  
  


• Encourage discipline, responsibility, and teamwork among students.
  
  


• Attend all scheduled rehearsals, band camp, football games, parades, competitions, and other performances.
  
  


• Work with the front ensemble instructor (if applicable) to coordinate percussion ensemble cohesion.
  
  

Qualifications:

• Experience playing and/or instructing marching percussion (high school, collegiate experience preferred).
  
  


• Strong understanding of percussion technique, pedagogy, and ensemble coordination.
  
  


• Ability to write or adapt percussion music for the ensemble.
  
  


• Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
  
  


• Ability to demonstrate techniques and lead by example.
  
  


• Availability for evening/weekend rehearsals, band camp, and performances.
  
  

Preferred:

• Experience with percussion notation software (e.g., Finale, MuseScore, Pyware, etc.).
  
  


• Familiarity with marching band drill and show design.
  
  


• Experience working with high school students in a teaching or coaching role.
  
  


• First aid/CPR certification.
  
  

Working Conditions:

• Outdoor and indoor rehearsals and performances.
  
  


• May involve extended periods of physical activity, marching, and sound exposure.
  
  


• Requires evening and weekend availability.
  
  


• May include travel with the band for performances and competitions.

Employment:              Stipend Coaching Agreement 

Evaluation:                 Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the 

                                     provisions of the Sussex County School Board’s policy manual.
