Job Description - Pharmacist in Charge

Greater Valley Health Center (GVHC) recognizes employees are at the heart of our ability to meet the needs of our patients and community. We invite every employee to contribute at the highest possible level. This position description is provided to outline the primary duties, qualifications, and job scope. It is not intended to limit the employee or GVHC to just the work identified. We expect each employee will offer his/her services wherever and whenever necessary to ensure the success of our endeavors.



Job Purpose:


Under the general direction and supervision of the Pharmacy Director and CEO, this Pharmacist in Charge functions as an integral member of a patient's care team by assuring the pharmacy delivers high-quality, patient-centered pharmaceutical care. All activities are performed in accordance with established policies and procedures and are carried out in the highest achievable level of competence in a manner demonstrating concern and consideration. Position will work within the scope of their certification, training, and experience.



Qualifications:


Essential: Doctorate or Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy.



Experience:


Desirable: Three (3) or more years as a Pharmacist in Charge experience.



Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:


Essential: Active/good standing Pharmacist license in Domicile State (Additional license in other states strongly preferred). Extensive knowledge of state and federal laws, rules, and regulations surrounding pharmacy practice and patient safety. Willingness to work varying schedules.



Special Requirements:


Essential: Have and maintain a valid Montana's driver license.



Main Duties and Responsibilities of the Role:


These duties are the essential functions and are not all-inclusive of all duties that the incumbent performs.



  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the pharmacy.

  • Provide supervision to pharmacy staff including scheduling and timesheet approval.

  • Resolve compliance and regulatory discrepancies.

  • Weekly and monthly compliance audits for DEA, State Board of Pharmacy.

  • Greater Valley Health Center Pharmacy Policy adherence.

  • Work with Regulatory agencies to include but not limited to, DEA, SBOP, CMS, FDA, and Compliance audits and remediation.

  • Serve as a liaison between Greater Valley Health Center and the Board of Pharmacy.

  • Attend management, policy, quality and other GVHC meetings as assigned.

  • Review event reporting and escalated issues for resolution. Interface with clients and team members as needed to resolve.

  • Participate with Pharmacy Director to review processes regularly to ensure optimal efficiency and embrace continuous quality improvement.

  • Participate with Pharmacy Director in maintaining and reporting all records for the dispensing of controlled substances.

  • Required participation in yearly complete inventory count and yearly complete controlled substance count.

  • Counsels patients and answers their questions regarding usage of medicine, side effects, interactions, contraindications, patient information privacy, generics, less expensive medicines, over-the-counter products, and refers to medical provider as needed to ensure medication is take correctly, health needs addressed, and satisfaction with service.

  • Performs pharmacist tasks including compounding, drug therapy reviews, verification, and medication management. Reviews, interprets, and accurately dispenses prescribed medications when necessitated by workload.

  • Ensures the pharmacy operates in accordance to regulations, company policies and standards. Responsible for establishing procedures that promotes the efficient workflow of the pharmacy including overseeing the staff scheduling, assigning roles, coordinating activities and soliciting employee suggestions. Responsible for the opening and closing of the pharmacy and shift change and scheduling duties.

  • Ensures the use of all elements of the Good Faith Dispensing policy in conjunction with state and federal controlled substance laws when filling prescriptions. The Product Review/Retail Fill Process Pharmacist has the ultimate responsibility for ensuring that the elements of Good Faith are present.

  • Follows-up with medical providers' offices to clarify prescribed medications, dosages, refills, interactions and allergies to suggest alternative medications, and answer medical provider questions.

  • Performs retail, clinical, and wellness services such as immunizations, flu shots, diabetes awareness and other preventive healthcare services.

  • Manages the maintenance, housekeeping, and improvement of the pharmacy department during repairs, cleaning, new equipment and changes to the layout to ensure a functioning, presentable and efficient pharmacy.

  • Ensure compliance with all state and federal pharmacy laws and regulations.

  • Ensure the pharmacy maintains accurate, safe, and compliant inventory practices. Ensures proper storage of medications.

  • Educate and mentor pharmacy staff on best practices and new developments.

  • Perform yearly evaluations with staff and discussions strengths and areas of improvement.

  • Handles discipline and terminations of employees in accordance with GVHC policy.



Working Environment:


Work is mainly performed in an office/pharmacy setting with computer/phone work and moderate noise. Standing, bending, sitting, lifting, stooping required. You may be required to travel to different clinic locations.

Work independently to complete tasks; use sound judgement but ask questions if needed; show initiative for work/workflow improvements.



Communication & Networking:


Clear and detailed written and/or verbal communication with patients, patient family members, co-workers, and providers is required.



Finance/Resource Management:


Maintain financial resources according to facility requirements.



People Management:


Supervisory responsibilities.
