Job Description - Pharmacy Technician


COMPANY OVERVIEW:

This position will be affiliated with Spectrum Medical Care Center (SMCC) under a separate business entity, PRIDE RX.

SMCC is a non-profit healthcare organization based in Phoenix, Arizona, providing holistic, stigma-free care to all, with a long standing and intentional focus on the LGBTQ+ and HIV+ communities.
As one of Arizona’s most trusted providers of culturally competent, gender-affirming, and inclusive care, SMCC offers a safe environment for primary, preventive, and specialty health services. We are especially known for our services related to HIV, HCV, and STI care, and our leadership in advancing health equity in Arizona.

POSITION OVERVIEW: Pharmacy Technician:

The Pharmacy Technician assists the pharmacist in the preparation, processing, and dispensing of prescription medications in compliance with Arizona state laws and pharmacy policies. The technician’s primary role is to support efficient pharmacy operations while ensuring accuracy, safety, and excellent customer service. All duties are performed under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Prescription Processing
  • Receive written, electronic, and verbal prescriptions from patients, prescribers, or authorized agents
  • Verify patient demographics (e.g., name, address, date of birth) and prescriber information for completeness and legibility
  • Enter prescription data accurately into the pharmacy computer system
  • Prepare prescriptions for dispensing by:
  • Retrieving medications from stock
  • Counting, pouring, measuring, or mixing medications
  • Placing medications into appropriate containers
  • Affixing accurate labels to prescription containers
  • Package and repackage medications as permitted by Arizona law
Customer Service
  • Greet and assist patients in person and by telephone in a professional and courteous manner
  • Retrieve completed prescriptions for patient pickup
  • Process cash register transactions for new and refill prescriptions accurately and efficiently
  • Notify the pharmacist when patient counseling is required
Administrative and Operational Support
  • Answer incoming telephone calls and route calls to the pharmacist when professional judgment or counseling is required
  • Obtain original prescriptions or records from pharmacy files when clarification is needed
  • Maintain an organized workflow to promote efficient prescription processing
  • Assist with inventory-related tasks, including stocking medications and monitoring supplies

Compliance and Safety
  • Perform all duties in accordance with Arizona Board of Pharmacy laws and regulations
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA requirements
  • Report medication errors or discrepancies promptly to the supervising pharmacist
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be able to obtain an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card during background check process. (Required)
  • Active Arizona Pharmacy Technician Registration in good standing
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to work under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist
Preferred
  • Pharmacy technician certification (PTCB or ExCPT)
  • Previous retail or hospital pharmacy experience
  • Familiarity with pharmacy computer systems
Skills & Competencies
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Effective communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Basic math and computer proficiency
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Ability to lift and move pharmacy supplies (up to 25 lbs)
  • Manual dexterity to count and handle medications
