2. Job Purpose

The role of the phlebotomist is to be responsible for using their medical knowledge to take blood samples from patients. Their duties include preparing the testing room with the proper tools, walking patients through the process when inserting needles and retrieving samples and labeling samples for further analysis in medical laboratories.

5. Role of the Department

The role of the phlebotomist is to be responsible for using their medical knowledge to take blood samples from patients. Their duties include preparing the testing room with the proper tools, walking patients through the process when inserting needles and retrieving samples and labeling samples for further analysis in medical laboratories.

                  

6. Key Result Areas

  • Preparing patients before drawing blood
  • Explaining blood draw procedures to patients and answering any questions about the process
  • Following all health and safety protocols and procedures to maintain sanitary work areas
  • Gathering medical testing materials, including needles, sample vials, blood storage bags and test tubes
  • Verifying patient information and labeling blood samples properly
  • Accurately updating patient information in the organization’s database
  • Helping nervous or frightened patients remain calm during blood draws
  • Working with supervising Physicians and following their directions at all times
  • Ensures that all materials are ready to be picked up from the AARA Site Lab in line with agreed third party collection schedules.
  • Ensures the timeous processing of all collected clinical samples. Ensures particular prioritization and focus on time-sensitive sample testing.
  • Assist in training, guiding and mentoring less experienced staff. Provides feedback to the Lab Manager on junior staff.
  • Promotes effective interdepartmental relationships

8. Assignment and Review of Work

All new AARA employees will agree initial objectives to be assessed on completion of their 90-day initial review period. Thereafter, all employees will enter the annual appraisal cycle under the AARA Talent, Performance and Career Management Policy where annual appraisals will be conducted by their Line Manager and CEO. Further information on the appraisal cycle calendar is available from the HR Manager and from the Talent, Performance and Career Management Policy on the AARA Intranet.

11. Knowledge, Skill, Training and Experience to do the Job

Required

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Successful completion of Medical Assistant or Phlebotomy training program from an accredited facility.
  • >1 year Phlebotomy experience
  • Strong communication skills; both written and verbal
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment
  • Comfortable working under minimal supervision

Preferred

  • Bilingual in Spanish
