The Phlebotomist performs phlebotomy, waived laboratory tests and other related duties. These duties include (but are not limited too): Collection of blood specimens via venipuncture or capillary, performs assigned waived testing, performance of clerical and courier functions, and specimen processing. Strives for superior performance by consistently providing a high standard of care.
Job Duties:
Collect blood specimens through venipuncture and capillary puncture while following patient identification and specimen labeling procedures.
Process, prepare, and distribute laboratory specimens to ensure accuracy, integrity, and compliance with testing requirements.
Perform waived laboratory testing, including urine testing, hemoccult testing, and other approved procedures following established competency standards.
Provide patients with instructions for specimen collection, including urine, stool, and sputum samples.
Utilize laboratory and hospital information systems (LIS, HIS, and EMR) for order entry, specimen tracking, documentation, and test registration.
Monitor and track specimens sent to reference laboratories and follow up on pending or outstanding testing.
Deliver excellent customer service by answering laboratory inquiries, scheduling appointments, processing orders, and directing calls appropriately.
Maintain laboratory inventory, stock supplies, and ensure work areas remain organized and adequately supplied.
Adhere to laboratory quality, safety, infection control, and regulatory standards, including proper use of PPE and compliance with accreditation requirements.
Perform quality control, competency, and specimen-tracking activities while identifying and escalating issues that may impact testing accuracy or patient care.
Prioritize workload effectively and adapt to challenging patient situations while supporting efficient laboratory operations.
Support the laboratory team and perform additional duties as assigned.
Requirements:
High school graduate or GED.
Graduate of Phlebotomy Technician program or Certified Medical Assistant program OR ability to become certified by acceptable agency (AMT, ASCP, NHA, NCCT, or equivalent) within 1 year of hire.
Ability to use computer programs or become proficient with EPIC EMR within four weeks of hire.
Must demonstrate excellent customer service skills, working with all age groups.
