Physician (Chief Hematology-Oncology)

Summary

The Hematology/Oncology Chief Physician (Section Chief) reports to the Chief of the Medicine Service (Chief of Medicine). The Section Chief has a combination of administrative, clinical, research and educational roles. Administratively, the Section Chief is the primary supervisor of the Hematology/Oncology Section. The Section Chief along with other Hematology/Oncology Physicians specializes in Benign and Malignant Disorders of the Hematologic System, and Malignant Solid Tumors.

Basic Requirements:

• Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met
• Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation
• Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
• Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
• The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia
• Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
• (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences
• Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
• PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
• PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
• Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
• Proficiency in spoken and written English
• Preferred Experience: Board Certified/Board Eligible

The Section Chief must qualify for academic appointment at the affiliate university.
Provide appropriate oversight and management of the Hematology/Oncology Section, including day-to-day clinical operations, yearly performance evaluations, biannual ongoing professional practice evaluations, and clinical documentation.
In collaboration with Program Directors and Associate Program Directors of the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix, ensures Fellowship Program, Internal Medicine Residency, and Medical Student Programs are adequately supervised and receive optimal medical education.
Have working knowledge of outpatient and the various consultative services.
Responsible for integrating the core values and mission of the facility into outpatient and inpatient care services.
Assist the Section and other Service Chiefs in the areas of: Resource Utilization Accomplishment of local, VISN and national goals.
Safety Hematology/Oncology Service Responsibilities Has clinical, teaching and administrative responsibilities.
Performs Consultative Histories and Physical Examinations, makes assessments, uses appropriate diagnostic evaluations, and implements timely and appropriate therapy.
Consults with and utilizes the NCCN guidelines or consults with other guidelines, references, or Physicians where appropriate.
Coverage of outpatient clinics; supervision of diagnosis and therapy for inpatients; supervision of outpatient chemotherapy and other Hematology/Oncology infusion procedures; and to conduct procedures for which the Physician has Education, Training, and Experience including Thoracentesis, Paracentesis, Lumbar Puncture and Bone Marrow Aspiration and Biopsy.
Expected to work closely with and respect the Professionalism of the other specialties represented in the Division which includes the specialized Hematology/Oncology: Nurse Practitioner, Nurses, Social Worker, Pharmacist and Nutritionist, all of whom are integral members of the Division of Hematology/Oncology.
Participates, oversees, and collaborates to ensure that all applicable clinical functions including outpatient and inpatient consultative medical care are performed.
Tasked with providing timely and courteous service to all Veterans seeking care.
Administrative Responsibilities In partnership with the Chief of Medicine, the Section Chief participates in strategic planning for the Medicine Service.
As requested by the Chief of Medicine, attends and provides input, as appropriate, to outpatient clinic management and other committees and councils, as needed.
In addition to attending the monthly Division meeting, the Section Chief attends other clinical and administrative staff meetings as may be required or directed by the Chief of Medicine.
Required to attend the Tumor Treatment Conference and actively promotes performance improvement measures within the Hematology/Oncology Section.
Supports VHA and all Medicine Service directives, policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
Educational Responsibilities Collaborates with other physicians to ensure proper education of medical students and residents when applicable.
Required to maintain Continuing Medical Education (CME), the State Medical License used by the Physician to practice in the Federal system, VA mandatory training, and certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)."
