Job Summary

Under moderate supervision, supports planning operations by assisting with zoning, land use, and development review activities. Performs entry to professional-level urban planning work, including interpreting regulations, reviewing permits, conducting research, supporting public engagement efforts, and assisting with planning projects and administrative tasks. Ensures compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and development standards while providing customer service to the public and stakeholders.

Planning Technician

• Provides technical assistance to staff planners and the public regarding planning programs and regulations.
• Assists with public outreach and community engagement initiatives.
• Reviews building, zoning, and special event permits for compliance with regulations.
• Prepares basic staff reports, recommendations, maps, charts, and tables.
• Conducts research and compiles data on planning-related issues.
• Assists with site inspections and monitoring of development activities.

Typical Qualifications

Planning Technician

• Associate's degree in urban planning, geography, architecture, construction management, social sciences, or related field
• Some relevant work experience or equivalent combination of education and training
• Valid driver's license

Planner I

• Bachelor's degree in urban planning, geography, public administration, or related field
• 6 months to 1 year of relevant planning experience
• Valid driver's license
