Job Description - Plant Engineering & Assembly Installation Support Engineer (Assembly & Automation)


SWJ Technology specializes in providing engineering, planning, and project management services across various industries. We are currently seeking several Plant Engineering & Assembly Installation Support Engineer (Assembly & Automation) for a client in the automotive industry, specializing in car manufacturing. This is a long-term Contractor role based in Blythewood, SC that requires onsite presence. PURPOSE: 
The Plant Engineering & Assembly Installation Support Engineer provides on-site technical, coordination, and project support during the construction, installation, and commissioning phases of new assembly operations. The role ensures that assembly equipment, conveyors, and automation systems are installed, integrated, commissioned, and handed over in compliance with engineering standards, project timelines, safety requirements, and quality expectations to enable a successful production start.
Please note that this project includes several positions.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Project & Installation Support
  • Support the Assembly Project Team during construction, installation, and commissioning phases.
  • Coordinate closely with internal teams, general contractors, suppliers, and automation partners.
  • Track project milestones, schedules, and construction progress; highlight deviations and risks.
  • Participate in daily on-site coordination, construction meetings, and interface management activities.
Technical Oversight & Field Engineering
  • Verify installation compliance with engineering specifications, layout drawings, and plant standards.
  • Provide real-time field engineering support during mechanical, electrical, and controls installation.
  • Evaluate and approve minor design adaptations or field modifications based on site conditions.
  • Ensure readiness and coordination of plant utilities (power, compressed air, data, etc.).
Installation & Commissioning
  • Perform pre-installation readiness checks (foundations, anchors, access routes, embedded parts).
  • Support inspections for alignment, installation quality, and mechanical integrity.
  • Assist with commissioning activities including power-up tests, I/O checks, control sequence validation, robot teaching, and tool calibration.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, controls, and software-related issues.
  • Validate equipment performance against cycle time, capacity, and quality requirements.
Automation, Controls & Integration
  • Ensure smooth integration of new equipment into PLC, SCADA, MES, and plant control architectures.
  • Review and validate control narratives, PLC logic, robot programs, and signal mapping.
  • Support testing of PLC and robot programs using archives and defined testing tools.
  • Support VASS V6 concepts, applications, and compliance for new and existing systems.
Documentation, Standards & Reporting
  • Review and ensure completeness of as-built drawings, schematics, manuals, and technical documentation.
  • Support creation and review of SOPs, preventive maintenance plans, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Maintain accurate construction site reports, deficiency lists, punch lists, and progress reports.
  • Store all deliverables and documentation in SharePoint systems.
Safety, Compliance & Acceptance
  • Participate in risk assessments and PFMEAs for new equipment.
  • Verify compliance with OSHA, ANSI, CE, and machine safety standards (E-stops, guarding, LOTO, ergonomics).
  • Support FAT, SAT, performance validation, and formal handover activities.
  • Support training of operators and maintenance personnel during production ramp-up.
Supplier & SDMS Support
  • Manage suppliers’ compliance with milestones and defined scopes via SDMS.
  • Track defects, scope changes, deviations from standards, and quantity reconciliations.
  • Support station acceptance, handover, and production start-up readiness.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or comparable technical discipline
  • Proven experience in final assembly, conveyor systems, and on-site plant installation projects.

REQUIRED SKILLS:
  • Strong background in plant engineering processes, assembly equipment, or automation systems.
  • Experience supporting construction, installation, commissioning, or production start-up in automotive manufacturing environments.
  • Strong project management, planning, and milestone tracking capabilities.
  • Interface management across civil, mechanical, electrical, controls, IT, and automation teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple activities simultaneously in a fast-paced construction environment.
  • MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), MS Teams
  • Jira, Confluence
  • Engineering documentation and reporting systems
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Structured, detail-oriented, and solution-focused mindset.
  • High sense of ownership, accountability, and on-site presence.

PREFERRED SKILLS:
  • German language skills strongly preferred (native level a plus).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Work is normally performed in an office, laboratory, manufacturing floor, or machine shop setting where physical work includes, but is not limited to sitting, standing, reaching, kneeling, bending, and lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Must be able to understand and comply with all relevant safety practices.

FLSA STATUS/WORKING SCHEDULE:
  • Location: Blythewood, SC.
  • Schedule: Mon-Fri, 40 hours/week, including approved weekend work
  • Overtime: As required
  • Assignment Start: March/July 2026
  • Assignment End: Q2/Q3 2027, possibility of extension
