Job Description - Positive Support and Intake Specialist
Positive Support and Intake Specialist
Location: Spearfish, SD
Company: Northern Hills Training Center
Job Type: Full-time
Make a difference from the very first day of someone’s services.
Northern Hills Training Center (NHTC) supports adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities across Lawrence, and Butte Counties. We operate program sites offering residential, vocational, day, community employment, and medical support services. We’re looking for a Positive Support & Intake Specialist to help people transition into our services successfully and to help our teams provide the positive, person-centered supports every person deserves.
This is a new role that combines two important pieces of our work. You’ll be the first point of contact for people referred to NHTC, getting to know their needs and planning a smooth transition into services. You’ll also partner with our teams to develop and support Positive Behavior Support Plans that help people live the lives they want in the least restrictive setting possible. Your time will be divided between new admissions and people currently served, based on where the need is greatest.
What You’ll Do
Coordinate the intake process from first referral through the start of services, working closely with case managers, families, guardians, and program leadership.
Coordinate comprehensive pre-admission needs assessments, with particular attention to people with high behavioral support needs.
Develop transition plans so staff are trained and supports are in place before services begin.
Conduct Functional Behavior Assessments and write Positive Behavior Support Plans.
Train and coach direct support staff to put positive support strategies into practice.
Deliver NHTC’s Safety-Care training as a certified trainer, so staff are fully prepared to support people with IDD safely and confidently.
Lead NHTC’s Human Rights/Positive Behavior Supports Committee, in line with South Dakota administrative rules.
What We’re Looking For
A Bachelor of Science in Human Services or another related field and/or equivalent experience.
Two to four years of experience in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities, including supporting people with behavioral support needs.
Experience with functional behavior assessment, intake, or case management is a plus but not a requirement.
Strong communication, organization, and relationship-building skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Therap or similar web-based systems.
Safety-Care Trainer certification preferred, or willingness to become certified.
Ability to pass a background check and drug screening
Benefits:
Paid training and ongoing professional development
Health, dental, and vision insurance (for eligible employees)
401k Retirement Plan
Verizon Discount
Discounted Gym Membership
Why NHTC
A regular weekday schedule, a mission-driven team, and the chance to shape a brand-new position from the ground up.
Please note that this position will remain open for two weeks. All interested applicants must submit their application materials by 11/16/2026 to be considered for the position.
Northern Hills Training Center is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
