Introduction to Intrinsic Schools

Intrinsic Schools is a public charter network whose mission is to create a revolutionary new school model that prepares all students for postsecondary success and world-changing endeavors.  We offer a chance to make a unique impact in urban education by creating an academic model that leverages great teaching and the precision of technology to personalize education for each student.  At our Belmont campus, we serve students in grades 7-12. At our downtown campus, we serve students in grades 9-12.  Our student demographics are 90% people of color, 86% free and reduced lunch and 19% students with disabilities.

Our Postsecondary Model

We individualize the postsecondary process for each student and celebrate all decisions: 4 year college, 2 year college, workforce, Military, or service. We are committed to helping each student create the best plan based on his or her interests, skills, values, and finances. We have a data-driven approach to college match and help students through each step of the college application process. Finally, we believe families are a crucial part of the postsecondary process and are committed to involving parents, families, and other influencers in the decision making process.

In order to help students and families make the best postsecondary decision, we believe in providing enriching experiences throughout their academic career. Seminar courses are where students will explore their strengths, interests, and values while strategically planning their academic future. The seminar teacher, in collaboration with the Postsecondary Team, will be responsible for continuously adapting our curriculum to meet the needs of the grade level.
 

The purpose of 12th grade Seminar is to support students’ transition to competitive postsecondary pathways by:

• Using a data-informed approach to teach and practice strong habits of organization, time management, and task initiation
• Strategically discussing postsecondary pathways and the the profile of a Highly Qualified Graduate; providing space for strategic short-term and long-term goal setting
• Promoting and facilitating application processes for postsecondary pathways including 4-year college, 2-year college, workforce programs, apprenticeships, service organizations, and the military
• Facilitating the financial aid process from beginning to end: FAFSA/Alternative Application submission, award letter collection, verification, and appeals
• Conferencing 1x1 with students
• Communicating regularly with families

Postsecondary Team Responsibilities

• Demonstrate 100% commitment to preparing every student for postsecondary success
• Promote our school’s mission of competitive access for all and commit to learning about and promoting all postsecondary pathways
• Manage caseload of seniors
• Teach some 12th grade seminar classes
• Collaborate with families regularly
• Provide feedback and thought partnership on PSS curriculum
• Help plan and attend parent workshops, particularly in October and April (FAFSA, Decision Meetings)
• Host office hours for students and families over the summer and throughout the year
• Use a data-driven approach to counseling
• Work collaboratively and cooperatively on a team of counselors
• Communicate with all stakeholders, including external partners, families, teachers, social workers, administrators, and advisors
• Innovate and problem solve independently and collaboratively
• Readily give and receive feedback from teammates
• Assist with administrative tasks related to postsecondary counseling: transcript management, sending materials via Naviance, maintain accurate student notes and files

• Lead an advisory that meets daily
• Seek to improve practice through data analysis, observation, and feedback
• Contribute to the overall Intrinsic Team by supporting colleagues, participating in school-wide events and seeking ways to improve the school

Qualifications

• Track record of driving student outcomes or a history of achievement with students of a similar population
• Strong influencing and motivating skills; able to build relationships with students, families, and postsecondary partners
• Organized and able to manage multiple projects, meet all deadlines and respond to action items in a timely manner
• Experienced using technology in the classroom or early adopter of technology in personal life or other areas
• Can demonstrate proficiency with Google Sheets
