Powdercoater

Job Description - Powdercoater

SUMMARY: The Finishing Department Powder Coater's primary job function is the application of either the primer powder or the colored top coat of powder onto frames & parts with the highest efficiency and effectiveness. Frames and parts come in many different shapes and sizes, from large bulky tables & chaises to small pieces the size of paper clips. Powder thickness, complete coverage of the item, transfer efficiency, power usage, and focus on getting the powder into cracks & crevices are just some of the areas where particular attention needs to be paid to maintain the highest quality finish.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

a. Apply powder coatings onto steel & aluminum furniture frames and parts using a powder application gun.

b. Double check to ensure the correct settings are on the powder coating gun control panel for the color powder you are about to spray before starting to spray.

c. Always spray powder at approximately 12 inches from the part, not too close, but not too far away to achieve the best transfer efficiency and coverage.

d. Daily Checks:

  • Proper ground from the powder application machine to the finishing line.

  • Inspect & check the powder hopper, gun & lines for proper operation. Some parts wear out, so it's important to check those parts at least once a week to ensure they are still in a condition to provide the optimal desired spray pattern & transfer efficiency.

  • Observe the conveyor and ensure you don't see it stopping when it shouldn't be or jerking too much.

  • Make sure the dust collection system is operating properly.

e. Train and become familiar with "powder mil (1 mil is equal to one thousand of an inch) thickness" to efficiently apply the correct amount of powder. The correct powder thickness will provide the best protection and the correct look, not waste powder.

f. Pay attention and observe the powder being applied to notice if there is anything unusual about the color of the unbaked powder based on your experience with the powder, such as color, the texture of the powder, particle size, clumpiness, etc. Stop spraying the powder anytime you notice something unusual, and notify your supervisor immediately.

g. Make sure to apply the powder to the entire frame. Pay special attention to NOT miss any spots or spray too thin or not enough mils to get the desired powder coverage level depending on the specific powder. Some powders may require more or less of a mil thickness to achieve the desired look for that particular powder.

h. Apply either a primer undercoat or a color topcoat following established standards & specifications.

i. Use proper safety equipment & procedures at all times.

j. Inspect your work for quality and ensure it meets established standards & specifications.

k. Keep work area clean and picked up.

QUALITY:

a. Quality must always be a top priority.

b. All quality issues, rejects, out of specification, and the like need to be documented & sent for review to the Department Lead and then to the Production Manager weekly.

SAFETY:

a. Understand thoroughly the Company's work and workplace safety policies and procedures.

b. Watch for employees who are not wearing proper safety equipment or are committing safety violations and report any incidents to your Lead, Supervisor, or Manager as soon as possible

c. Notify the department Lead Supervisor or Manager immediately of any serious situation to correct the situation.

d. Other duties as assigned.
