Job Description - Power Electronics Engineer

Mill is all about answering a simple question: how can we prevent waste? Less waste can save time, money, energy, maybe even our planet. And there’s no better place to start than food. Food waste is one of the most solvable climate problems facing us today. Plus, our trash really stinks. It’s gross, heavy, and our least favorite chore. At Mill we are striving to build a better environment for all, as we take on climate and kitchen change.

About this Role:

As a Power Electronics Engineer at Mill, you will be responsible for helping ideate, model and build the next generation of Mill’s dry and grind technology.  We are a small team and you will work cross-functionally with Mechanical and Systems Engineers, Firmware, Algorithms, and Product Teams to deliver world class products. This is a hands-on role and best suited for someone who has a history working on high power systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design AC-DC and DC-DC power conversion systems for single-phase and three-phase input configurations.

  • Develop system architecture and specifications for motor drives, power supplies, heaters, and control electronics.

  • Define grounding, filtering, and surge protection to ensure noise immunity and safety compliance.

  • Design mixed-signal PCBs including layout and stack-up considerations for power density and thermal dissipation.

  • Closely collaborate with firmware, mechanical, and systems engineers.

  • Design for compliance with UL and other certification standards.

  • Create validation plans, supporting both the design verification and reliability test process across all phases of product development.

  • Work with factory test teams, CMs, and third parts to design fixtures, define test and equipment procedures for mass production.

Qualifications

  • B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.

  • 5+ years of experience designing and shipping power electronics, preferably in 220V and/or 3-phase systems.

  • Deep understanding of switching topologies.

  • Proficiency in simulation tools (such as Matlab and SPICE), layout tools (Altium preferred), and test equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, Raspberry Pi, python scripting, etc.

  • Hands-on experience with motor control (preferably BLDC and AC induction), heater regulation and PLC-based systems.

  • Prior experience working on UL certified products, preferably industrial or kitchen appliances.

  • Applied experience with FW interfaces (such as SPI, UART, CAN, I2C) and embedded systems.

  • Ability to work independently and drive collaborative, crossfunctional workstreams.

The estimated base salary range for this position is $130k to $175k, which does not include the any benefits or equity. Various factors are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to experience, training, licensure and certifications, and business and organizational needs.
