Job Description - Practice Groups Fellow

PRACTICE GROUPS FELLOW - JD REQUIRED

THE FEDERALIST SOCIETY

The Federalist Society, a DC‑based non‑profit organization dedicated to informing the legal and public policy debate on a national level, invites applications for the Practice Groups Fellowship, a competitive and rewarding two-year role supporting the division that develops much of the Society’s national programming. Ideal for an attorney early in his or her legal career looking to establish a network and presence in Washington and gain exposure to a broad range of legal areas, this Fellowship offers unparalleled mentorship opportunities with Society leadership. This role may serve as a stepping stone to launch a career in the conservative and libertarian legal and policy movement. The Fellow will have the opportunity to hone their legal research, analysis, and writing skills and collaborate on the strategy, planning, and execution of a wide variety of Society programming, including the annual National Lawyers Convention. The Practice Groups Fellow will gain first-hand experience convening leading practitioners and scholars for timely debates and discussions of the most pressing legal issues of the day. Strong commitment to the mission and values of The Federalist Society is essential, and a JD is required. Fellows are eligible for health insurance and other benefits enjoyed by our staff.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

Under the direction of the Vice President, Practice Groups, you’ll:

  • Implement the strategic vision for the Practice Groups, including growth initiatives, new content formats, and improved engagement with members

  • Apply legal expertise and analysis to a wide range of emerging legal issues important to Federalist Society members and the broader conservative and libertarian legal and policy movement

  • Provide high-level guidance on programming priorities, ensuring alignment with Federalist Society priorities, ideological balance, and high-quality discussion

  • Write and develop content drawn from Practice Group activities for Federalist Society legal publications

  • Manage relationships with 22 Practice Group Executive Committees and keep abreast of the legal developments in each field

  • Oversee the planning and execution of Practice Group events, including in-person conferences, luncheons, salon dinners, and panels as well as webinars

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to think strategically about big picture ideas and direction as well as track and execute the details of plans and proposals

  • Diplomatic, unflappable, and balanced temperament capable of navigating disagreements or resolving unexpected problems

  • Strong commitment to the Federalist Society’s mission and values and an eagerness and ability to stay on top of legal developments in multiple practice areas

  • Ability to network and build relationships across our membership

  • Previous experience in law and public policy is preferred

  • A J.D. is required

WHO WE ARE:

  • Founded in 1982, the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies is a group of conservatives and libertarians dedicated to reforming the current legal order.  We are committed to the principles that the state exists to preserve freedom, that the separation of governmental powers is central to our Constitution, and that it is emphatically the duty of the judiciary to say what the law is, not what it should be.

  • By providing a forum for legal experts of opposing views to interact with members of the legal profession, the judiciary, law students, academics, and the architects of public policy, the Society has redefined the terms of legal debate.

  • The Society is a membership organization that includes, among other things, Student, Lawyers, and Faculty Divisions.  These Divisions include thousands of law students participating in chapters at most ABA-accredited law schools as well as active chapters of legal professionals in more than a hundred cities across the country.

WHERE YOU’LL WORK:

We are located in the heart of the District of Columbia, three blocks from the White House and across the street from the Farragut West Metro Station.

Our current schedule involves in-person work on Tuesdays-Thursdays each week, with opportunities to work remotely on Mondays and Fridays when event schedule permits.

This position reports directly to the Vice President, Practice Groups.
