Job Description - Pre-Op/PACU

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Pre-Op/PACU Nurse is responsible for providing high-quality, compassionate care to patients before and after surgical procedures. This role includes preparing patients for surgery, monitoring vital signs, administering medications, and ensuring a smooth recovery process. The nurse collaborates closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure patient safety and comfort throughout the perioperative experience.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Assess and prepare patients for surgery, including reviewing medical history and verifying surgical consent.
  • Monitor patients’ vital signs and condition during preoperative and postoperative phases.
  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments.
  • Provide emotional support and education to patients and families regarding procedures and recovery.
  • Ensure proper documentation of patient care and progress.
  • Collaborate with surgical team members to ensure timely and safe patient transitions.
  • Respond to emergencies and changes in patient condition with appropriate interventions.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized environment in compliance with infection control standards.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and staff training.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA and organizational policies.

  

REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Active RN license in the state of practice.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in perioperative nursing, preferably in Pre-Op/PACU settings.
  • BLS and ACLS certification required.
  • Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:

  • Exerting up to twenty-five pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise  move objects.
  • Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Have close visual acuity to perform an activity including viewing a computer terminal, extensive reading, interpretation, etc.
  • Must possess  the physical, mental, and cognitive skills needed to complete essential  tasks, including abilities such as learning, remembering, focusing, categorizing, and integrating information for comprehension, problem-solving, and timely decision-making.
  • Must be able to be stationary for prolonged periods of time

COGNITIVE REQUIREMENT:

  • Executes tasks independently.
  • Learns and memorizes tasks.
  • Maintains concentration/focus on tasks.
  • Performs task in a demanding environment requiring multi-task and prioritize work.
  • Must be comfortable working and interacting with large groups of people daily.
