Press Operator II

Description

General Purpose of the Position: 

The rotogravure printing Press Operator 2 primary function is to aid the Press Operator 1 to prepare, operate and maintain the rotogravure printing presses to minimize waste improve efficient use of materials set the standard for excellence in product quality under the supervision of a production shift supervisor. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Follow proper OSHA standards and is trained in lock out/tag out, confined spaces, hazard communications, hazardous waste, and fire training. Follow all plant safety rules; Understands and follows ISO procedures and GMP personnel practices and guidelines. 

Press Operator 2’s are responsible to assist the Press Operator 1 for the overall quality of printed product being produced off the rotogravure presses. 

Responsible for the basic mechanical function of operating the rotogravure printing presses; includes set up and basic troubleshooting of registration systems, ink pumping systems, solvents/dry speeds and heats, application and usage of doctor blades, and tensions and pulling groups. 

Responsible for the proper mechanical installation of printing carts insuring the correct cylinders are mounted and the accurate raw materials are installed for the job in process. 

Operator 2’s are responsible for making basic ink/color adjustments to meet the appropriate customer color standard. 

With the guidance of the Press Operator 1, ensures that presses are webbed properly for accurate lay down of color to match printing overlays. 

Works with Press Operator 1 and Assistant Press operators to set up ink pumps, hoses, and sumps and changing out carts with cylinders for job changeovers. 

Assist with set-up and maintaining ink viscosities and auto-viscosity on presses. 

Operates overhead hoist to load/unload/position raw and finished WIP rolls; label rolls as required by company procedure or customer specifications.

Work with quality and ink departments to meet color standards and quality checks. 

Minimize waste, improve efficient use of materials and ensure product quality meets all customer requirements.

Press Operator 2 will be expected to prepare, operate and maintain the rotogravure printing presses on less complex jobs once training is complete.  

Maintains appropriate paperwork or records.

All other tasks and duties as assigned by supervisor or manager. 

Requirements

Skills and Abilities Required:

Visual, especially color acuity for detecting flawed/substandard printing and depth perception are vital to this position. Attention to details and ability to work under the pressure of deadlines.

Effective oral communication skills needed to work with others.

Problem solving and critical thinking skills necessary for decision making.

Reading and writing comprehension as well as basic mathematics.

Requires mechanical ability.

Ability to adhere to schedules production/job/shipping.

Skill in lifting heavy packages and objects. 

Skill in operating forklift or other materials handling equipment in tight congested areas. 

Computer Equipment and Software Requirements:

Basic computer skills to operate a computer to obtain customer job specifications/ISO procedures for processing and converting of material labels. 

Physical Effort: 

Skills and Abilities Required:

Computer Equipment and Software Requirements:

Basic computer skills to operate a computer to obtain customer job specifications/ISO procedures for processing and converting of material labels. 

Physical Effort: 

Work requires exerting up to 10 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 75 lbs. of force occasionally to move/lift objects vertically and/or horizontally. Work requires employees to stand/walk occasionally with frequent reaching, stooping, bending, with occasionally crouching, kneeling, and twisting to move product to and from pallets and mount on machines.
