Prevention Specialist Family Support Services of Amarillo (FSS)-Full-Time
Position Summary The Prevention Specialist is the heartbeat of FSS’s prevention and education efforts. This position works directly with youth, parents, and community partners to deliver evidence-informed prevention programming that strengthens families, builds protective factors, and interrupts cycles of violence and trauma. The Prevention Specialist is equal parts facilitator, connector, and advocate—bringing energy, consistency, and care into schools, neighborhoods, and community spaces.
This role is grounded in relationship-building and hands-on facilitation, with a strong emphasis on youth development, family engagement, and community-based prevention strategies aligned with FSS’s mission.
Essential Responsibilities The Prevention Specialist facilitates prevention and education programming for youth and families, including but not limited to group mentoring, skills-based groups, parent education, and family-focused curricula such as Strengthening Families, Parent Cafés, and other evidence-informed or promising practices used by FSS.
They engage youth through interactive, trauma-informed approaches that promote leadership development, healthy relationships, emotional regulation, and positive decision-making, particularly for youth in high-risk or underserved communities.
The position supports family engagement efforts by helping plan and facilitate family nights, parent workshops, and community events designed to strengthen caregiver-child connections and build community trust.
The Prevention Specialist collaborates with schools, neighborhood partners, and community organizations to coordinate programming, ensure consistent participation, and strengthen referral pathways into FSS services.
They assist with outreach and recruitment of participants, working closely with internal teams and external partners to ensure programs reach intended populations.
The role includes accurate and timely documentation of services, attendance, outcomes, and participant feedback in accordance with grant requirements and internal reporting standards.
The Prevention Specialist participates in program planning, curriculum adaptation, and continuous quality improvement efforts to ensure programming remains engaging, culturally responsive, and effective.
They support Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) activities and other youth leadership initiatives as assigned.
This position works collaboratively across FSS divisions, making internal referrals and supporting a warm handoff to advocacy, counseling, or other services when appropriate.
Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, education, human services, or a related field preferred. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
Experience working with youth, families, or community-based programs, particularly in prevention, education, or youth development settings.
Strong group facilitation skills with the ability to engage diverse audiences in an authentic and respectful way.
Knowledge of trauma-informed care, protective factors, and prevention frameworks.
Ability to build rapport quickly with youth, parents, and community partners.
Comfort working in school, community, and neighborhood-based settings.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, particularly with documentation and reporting.
Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus but not required.
Additional Requirements Ability to work some evenings and occasional weekends to support programming and family events.
Valid Texas driver’s license and reliable transportation.
