Primary Therapist

Location: On-Site – Bloomington, Indiana
Department: Clinical
Reports to: Clinical Director
Salary: Competitive, based on licensure and experience

We specialize in treating substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions through evidence-based and trauma-informed clinical care. Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Primary Therapist to join our clinical team in Bloomington, Indiana. This role is essential in supporting clients through their recovery from substance use and mental health disorders by offering compassionate and evidence-based treatment.

The ideal candidate is a licensed behavioral health professional with expertise in treating co-occurring disorders, capable of delivering individualized and group therapy while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Assessment & Diagnosis

  • Conduct biopsychosocial assessments using validated tools (e.g., ASI).
  • Diagnose substance use and mental health disorders in alignment with DSM-5 criteria.
  • Evaluate level of care needs per ASAM guidelines.
  • Integrate collateral information into clinical understanding and planning.

Treatment Planning & Therapy

  • Create individualized treatment plans tailored to both addiction and mental health needs.
  • Facilitate individual and group therapy sessions, addressing emotional, psychological, and behavioral issues.
  • Reassess and update treatment goals based on client progress and emerging clinical needs.

Monitoring, Case Coordination & Discharge Planning

  • Track client progress across both substance use and mental health domains.
  • Develop safe and effective discharge or transition plans.
  • Coordinate with external providers (e.g., psychiatrists, mental health counselors, legal or academic contacts) for a continuum of care.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate, timely documentation using electronic health records.
  • Ensure clinical notes meet ethical and regulatory standards, including signatures and confidentiality protocols.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration & Crisis Response

  • Participate in clinical team meetings, case reviews, and staffing discussions.
  • Identify and respond to psychiatric and behavioral health crises.
  • Fulfill mandatory reporting obligations as required by law.

Cultural Competency & Ethical Standards

  • Provide care that is respectful of and responsive to cultural, ethnic, and individual differences.
  • Practice within the highest ethical standards of the field and in accordance with BRC policies.

Additional Duties

  • Attend scheduled supervision, training, and continuing education meetings.
  • Perform related tasks as assigned by supervisory staff or the Clinical Director.

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience providing therapy for individuals with substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders.
  • Working knowledge of ASAM criteria, DSM-5 diagnostics, trauma-informed approaches, and motivational interviewing techniques.
  • Experience with crisis intervention and management is strongly preferred.

Education & Licensure

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a closely related field required.
  • Active licensure in the state of Indiana (LCSW, LPC, LMFT, LMHC, CADC, or equivalent) preferred.
  • Candidates working toward full licensure may also be considered.
