Principal Civil Engineer

Position Overview
You are responsible for leading the design and execution of residential, commercial, and public development projects while developing and maintaining a strong pipeline of work for the team. You will work closely with clients and internal teams to coordinate quality designs, oversee permitting processes, and ensure projects are delivered on schedule and within budget.
You serve as a senior technical leader, guiding design teams, supporting project delivery, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements throughout all project phases. This role requires strong technical expertise, leadership, and business development capabilities, along with the ability to mentor staff and contribute to company growth and profitability.
You also support team development by contributing to strategic hiring efforts, referring qualified candidates, and supporting onboarding of new employees through your professional network.

Key Responsibilities
Leadership, Management, and Operations
- Lead and coordinate design teams to deliver high-quality engineering solutions
- Oversee project schedules, budgets, and overall project performance
- Ensure compliance with permitting requirements and regulatory standards
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to design staff
- Coordinate across departments, clients, and agencies to ensure efficient project execution
- Ensure QA/QC procedures are implemented and maintained across projects
- Support continuous improvement of company tools, resources, and processes
Business Development, Revenue, and Growth
- Develop new business opportunities and expand existing client relationships
- Serve as a client manager, developing proposals, budgets, and project strategies
- Strengthen market presence and contribute to revenue growth and profitability goals
- Participate in professional and technical organizations to support business development
Technical Responsibilities
- Lead and support engineering design efforts, including:
- Site grading
- Roadway design
- Stormwater conveyance and modeling
- Sewer system design
- Water system design
- TESC system design
- Analyze engineering and survey reports, maps, and planning data to support project design and feasibility
- Develop project layouts that meet client needs and regulatory requirements
- Oversee permitting strategies and coordinate permit applications with agencies
- Prepare and review reports, specifications, construction drawings, and calculations
- Review shop drawings, RFQs, RFIs, and contract documents for accuracy and compliance
- Support construction phase services, including site inspections and coordination
Skills and Specifications
- Proven ability to apply advanced technical expertise and clearly communicate engineering concepts
- Experience preparing plans, specifications, and cost estimates, and supporting construction-phase services
- Experience with permitting processes and regulatory coordination
- Ability to interpret land use codes and apply them to project design and feasibility
- Demonstrated ability to solve complex engineering challenges
- Leadership, staff management, and mentoring capabilities
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including report and proposal preparation
- Demonstrated project and task management abilities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
- Ability and willingness to develop business from new and existing clients
- Established local client relationships are a plus
- High proficiency in Civil 3D and Bluebeam
Education, Experience, Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering (Master's degree preferred)
- 12+ years of progressively responsible engineering and project management experience
- Land development project experience required
- Professional Engineering (PE) License required; multi-state licensure preferred
- Valid Washington State driver’s license
