The Principal Engineer I is responsible and accountable for the design integrity of display cases within the Core Portfolio. This includes, but is not limited to, case performance, development, testing, and compliance to regulations and market needs. The Principal Engineer will ensure the engineering resources have the proper skill sets and direction to deliver the products within scope and timeline. This position will also provide technical consultation to other organizations, work in leadership positions on projects and work directly with our customers to provide information and guidance. The Principal Engineer will lead cross-functional teams in the continuous improvement of his or her product lines, including design quality, performance improvement, and flexibility to meet market needs. This position reports to the Chief Engineer – Core and Distributed Products.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

In depth understanding of product families within the Core Portfolio. Thorough knowledge of how they interact with the other product domains in the portfolio.

Provides strategic direction on product design and project planning.

Responsible for maintaining consistency and integrity of engineering designs through participation in large projects. Provides engineering support as needed on all projects.

High level technical leadership of projects throughout the business.

Technical mentor for Engineering project teams. Supports, guides and helps grow Engineering technical skills within project teams. Utilizes knowledge to promote IP within design process and helps guide Engineers through the IP process.

Interacts widely with external customers providing high level technical support.

Subject matter expert of all responsible product lines. Makes strategic decisions to drive business objectives.

Thorough understanding of Sheet metal, Tubing Design, and Fabrication process capabilities of responsible product lines. Leverages knowledge to drive consistency and uniformity within project teams and product platforms.

Thorough understanding of ergonomic principals. Leverages knowledge to drive consistency and uniformity within project teams.

Supports develop of large complex projects involving multiple work groups. Complete understanding of Hussmann Gate Process. Makes strategic decisions on all responsible projects (trade-offs, resources, testing, etc.)

Responsible for project cost targets. Drives up-front VA/VE efforts in designs where applicable. Organizes strategic project teams to meet project cost objectives.

Responsible for overall Product line mechanical structure and performance. Drives utilization of internal and external tools to ensure product quality, such as FEA and CFD simulations. Thorough understanding of applicable regulatory standards.

Responsible for overall Product Line Electrical Requirements ensuring safe operation. Drives utilization of internal and external tools to ensure product quality. Thorough understanding of applicable regulatory standards.

Responsible for Product Line Configurations and overall Product architecture. Thorough understanding of responsible product line architecture and limitations. Drives consistency and uniformity within project teams.

Leading efforts to improve the financial impact of engineering activities on the business. Responsible for financial impact of projects on the business.

Responsible for overall Product Control Strategy and operation. Drives utilization of internal and external tools to ensure product quality. Thorough understanding of applicable regulatory standards.

Responsible for overall Refrigeration Component selection and Product operation. Drives utilization of internal and external tools to ensure product quality. Thorough understanding of applicable regulatory standards.

Captures Engineering knowledge within his or her product lines to ensure critical learnings are catalogued and shared across product lines.

Ability to handle preparation and presentation of technical subject matter to audiences of varied technical expertise.

Stays up to date on the latest regulatory developments on safety standards (e.g., UL), refrigerants (e.g., EPA), and energy efficiency (e.g., DOE) to understand how his or her product lines must adapt to meet new requirements.

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

10-15 years of directly related engineering experience in commercial refrigeration.

Experience leading mechanical design projects adhering to department goals and standards.

This position requires a culturally intelligent individual who has a strong ability to influence combined with an analytical and commercially pragmatic approach that facilitates technical critical path analysis and constraint management.

This position requires a strong technical acumen along with collaboration skill sets and a global mindset.

Expert technical understanding and design knowledge of refrigeration systems and components, including but not limited to DX, transcritical CO2, A2L, and R290

Knowledge and experience in the application of UL product standards and ASHRAE/ANSI/AHRI standards and methods of test for commercial refrigeration.

Excellent time management and organizational skills.

25% travel.

EDUCATION:

BS in Engineering or technical discipline. Preferable MS in technical discipline. 15 years’ experience required if applicant doesn't have MS degree.
