The person in this Principal Manufacturing Engineer role will work from the Medtronic facility located in Warsaw, Indiana.

This role will require 25% of travel to enhance collaboration and ensure successful completion of projects.

The Principal Manufacturing Engineer serves as the technical leader for advanced CNC programming, CAD/CAM systems, and manufacturing process development, driving the optimization of machining operations across production sites. This role develops and maintains CNC programs, simulation models, and digital manufacturing systems while partnering with engineering, tooling, and production teams to ensure manufacturability, quality, and efficiency. The engineer leads process improvements, troubleshooting, and Lean initiatives, leveraging advanced CAD/CAM tools, virtual simulation, and statistical methods to enhance product performance, reduce costs, and standardize best practices. Acting as a subject matter expert, the role also supports supplier and site activities, mentors engineers and programmers, and guides the implementation of new technologies, tooling concepts, and manufacturing capabilities.

  • Designs components or portions of systems and modifies existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing and field service operations 

  • Utilizes computer-aided design equipment (CAD, CAM) and/or graphic simulation and optimization tools, such as CATIA, ProEngineer, Solidworx, MasterCam, Esprit, Siemens NX, Vericut Softwares 

  • Gathers information, makes studies, computes calculations, simulates and prepares original rough layouts, sketches to present design proposals 

  • Coordinates design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, material, and planning group such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, and contractual specifications. 

  • Generates manufacturing process, CNC programs, simulate them in a virtual environment and develop close loop system for assigned facilities which require simultaneous axis profiling. This can be done by manual programming and CAD/CAM/Simulation Technology Macro programming will be  in some instances. 

  • Responsible for advanced support to manufacturing sites 

  • Completes activities of Lean Sigma projects and process improvements 

  • Troubleshoots a variety of moderate to highly complex CNC programming and tooling problems on the virtual environment and production floor for new and mature product lines driving necessary changes through the manufacturing engineering process control system throughout the sites 

  • Develops and maintains set-up process sheets to compliment CNC programs and partners with the Manufacturing Engineers on development and support of production sites 

  • Functions as “in-house expert” on CAD/CAM/Simulation software and provides training for other staff Works closely with Engineering personnel to ensure the utilization of the Company’s CAD/CAM/Simulation system for generations of CNC programs including development of post-processors Utilizes the Company’s CAD/CAM/Simulation system for generation of CNC programs including development of post-processors and machines digital twins. 

  • Makes appropriate changes in manufacturing tooling and CNC programs when dictated by engineering drawing changes. Documents all change through the manufacturing engineering process control system. 

  • Initiate CNC programming techniques at an expert level to initiate and lead improvements in CNC programming techniques to improve processing methods and/or part quality. 

  • Makes recommendations on acquisitions of upgrades and enhancements of the Company’s CNC programming and simulation tools and CNC machine interfaces. May require conducting machine run-offs. Provides technical assistance to purchasing personnel and suppliers. 

  • Creates conceptual designs for fixtures and special cutting tools Participates in tool design reviews with Manufacturing Engineer, Tooling Engineer, purchasing personnel and outside tool suppliers 

  • Trains shop employees and other Programmers on new tooling introductions, CNC programs, close loop corrections techniques and manufacturing process/methods required of new and existing equipment 

  • Identifies opportunities and leads improvement initiatives and projects 

  • Communicates Programming knowledge and information in the form of presentations to other employees, including Senior Staff 

  • Conducts print reviews with R&D team propose and make necessary changes to ensure proper inspection system method, capability, and product manufacturability 

  • Recommends design or test methods and statistical process control procedures for achieving required levels of product reliability  

  • Initiates improvements in current quality systems, processes or methods to improve part quality, schedule performance and to reduce manufacturing costs 

 

MUST HAVE (Minimum Qualifications)

  • 7+ years of experience with a bachelor’s degree or 5+ years of experience with an advanced degree

NICE TO HAVE (Preferred Qualifications)

    • 7+ years of experience in a high-tech manufacturing environment providing direct manufacturing process supportMedical device industry experience  

    • GD&T Certification 

    • Green Belt Certification 

    • Lean Six Sigma Certification 

    • Ability to travel as needed 

    • CAM simulation experience 

    • Vericut simulation experience 

    For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.

    Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$123,200.00 - $184,800.00

     

    This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

    The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

    The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
