The Principal Engineer will play a key role in overseeing the design, development and optimization of utility scale power generators, electrical systems, and controls. The position requires deep technical expertise, leadership skills, and a proven ability to work on complex power generation projects, interconnected to the grid or behind-the-meter.
This role will require working with electrical engineering and controls within the power generation sector, including work with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), electric utilities, non-utility generators, or oil and gas companies.
Key Responsibilities:
· Lead Engineering Efforts: Provide technical leadership and ownership for power generation electrical systems, including the design, specification, and integration of electrical equipment and controls for power plants, including both new builds and upgrades.
· Electrical & Control Systems Expertise: Offer hands-on expertise in electrical and control systems for power generation equipment, including generators, transformers, switchgear, protective relays, control panels, and SCADA systems.
· System Design & Optimization: Lead the design and implementation of plant electrical and control systems, ensuring systems are optimized for efficiency, reliability, and safety.
· Power Generation Systems: Select and lead integration of thermal power generation sources including combustion turbines.
· Project Management: Manage multiple projects simultaneously, including coordinating with cross-functional teams, managing timelines, and ensuring quality control throughout the project lifecycle.
· Troubleshooting & Problem Solving: Troubleshoot complex electrical and control system issues in the field, providing innovative solutions to ensure uninterrupted power generation.
· Compliance & Standards: Ensure all systems comply with industry standards, regulations (e.g., NERC, IEEE, IEC), and safety codes. Stay abreast of evolving industry regulations and integrate them into system designs and practices.
· Mentorship & Training: Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and training to junior engineers and technical staff. Foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation within the team.
· Customer Interaction: Collaborate with internal stakeholders, customers, and vendors to ensure that all electrical systems meet performance specifications and operational requirements.
· Documentation & Reporting: Prepare detailed engineering reports, technical specifications, and project documentation, including commissioning, testing, and system performance data.
Basic Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or a closely related field).
· 7+ years of hands-on experience in power generation electrical equipment and controls, specifically with OEMs, electric utilities, non-utility generators, or oil and gas companies.
· 7+ years of experience with electrical equipment used in power generation (e.g., generators, transformers, switchgear) and control systems (e.g., PLCs, SCADA, DCS).
· 5+ years of experience with industry standards, such as NERC, IEEE, IEC, and experience with electrical safety regulations and practices.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
· Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or a closely related field).
· PMP or similar certification.
· Professional Engineering License (PE): Current and valid Professional Engineer license.
· Familiarity with the latest advancements in power generation controls and digitalization (e.g., predictive maintenance, smart grids).
· Expertise in commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting electrical and control systems in the field.
· Comfortable with ambiguity as data center and power generation industries mature together.
· Proven ability to manage complex projects and lead cross-functional teams.
· Ability to assess complex electrical systems and resolve technical issues quickly and efficiently.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including preparing and presenting technical reports, proposals, and recommendations.
This role includes up to 20% travel.
Expected Total Compensation Range (Base + Bonus): $240,000 - $300,000
