Job Description - PRN Registered Nurse - Convalescent Care

Description

Job Overview:  Join our leading orthopedic practice as a Convalescent Care RN, where you'll support patients through the critical recovery phase following surgery. At our Orthopedic Surgery Center, we are committed to compassion, excellence, and teamwork. You’ll be part of a collaborative environment that values professional growth and continuous learning. Our patients range from general orthopedics to specialized cases in joint replacement, sports medicine, and spine care—giving you the opportunity to make a meaningful impact as they regain strength and independence. 

Department: Convalescent Care

Reports to: Clinical Director

Schedule/Type: PRN- onsite/hourly  M-F variable 12/hr days, 7am-7pm/7pm-7am

Wage: $44/hr, commensurate with experience

Bonus Eligibility: No

Requirements

 Essential Duties 

  • Postoperative Patient Care: Deliver comprehensive nursing care to patients recovering from orthopedic procedures, including joint replacements, sports medicine surgeries, fractures, spine surgeries, and other orthopedic interventions. Ensure continuity of care during the convalescent phase.
  • Clinical Assessment & Monitoring: Perform regular and thorough assessments of patients' physical and emotional status. Monitor vital signs, evaluate wound sites, and promptly identify and respond to any complications or changes in condition.
  • Pain & Symptom Management: Collaborate with physicians and other care team members to manage postoperative pain. Administer medications, evaluate effectiveness, and implement non-pharmacological interventions as appropriate.
  • Wound & Incision Care: Conduct dressing changes and wound assessments, ensuring proper healing and preventing infection through evidence-based practices and coordination with the surgical team.
  • Patient & Family Education: Educate patients and their families on postoperative care routines, including medications, mobility strategies, activity restrictions, rehabilitation expectations, and use of assistive devices to ensure a smooth recovery.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Partner closely with physicians, surgeons, physical therapists, case managers, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care and discharge plans.
  • Accurate Documentation: Maintain timely, accurate, and complete patient records, including assessments, interventions, care outcomes, and communications, in compliance with legal and regulatory standards.
  • Safety & Infection Control: Rigorously follow infection control protocols, medication administration guidelines, and organizational safety standards to maintain a clean, safe, and compliant care environment.
  • Emotional & Psychosocial Support: Offer empathetic support to patients and their families during recovery, addressing concerns, easing anxieties, and promoting patient confidence and independence.

Skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to assess complex clinical situations, apply sound nursing judgment, and implement appropriate care plans in dynamic recovery settings.
  • Advanced knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and surgical recovery processes, enabling early recognition of postoperative complications or deviations from expected outcomes.
  • Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting clinical equipment and medical supplies used in postoperative orthopedic care and patient monitoring.
  • Commitment to evidence-based practice with the ability to adapt quickly to evolving clinical protocols and changing patient conditions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey clinical information to patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail in documenting patient care, interventions, and outcomes in electronic medical records while maintaining data security and compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Adherence to infection control protocols, patient privacy regulations (including HIPAA), and hygiene best practices to ensure a safe and respectful care environment..

 

Education/Certification requirements 

  • Degree in Nursing: Bachelors Preferred
  • Current Colorado Registered Nurse license
  • BCLS & ACLS certification required.
