Job Description - Process Engineer

The tasks listed below are those that represent most of the time spent working in this position.  Management may assign other essential duties as deemed necessary.

  • Extends to complete complex calculations, generates technical reports that summarize treatment performance, employs project management skills and coordinates efforts across multiple departments, and conveys difficult concepts effectively.
  • Identifies and plans for deficiencies in current WRRF treatment capacity and utilizes the information to identify capital projects necessary to improve WRRF performance.
  • Develops and presents wastewater process training materials to ensure the proper training of operations staff.
  • Serves as a technical resource, understands, and stays abreast of emerging wastewater treatment technologies and research to improve the performance of the WRRFs.
  • Provides technical guidance and assistance in ensuring efficient and effective wastewater treatment plant operations and ensures plant compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Serves as technical adviser for the assigned WRRF.
  • Identifies WRRF treatment deficiencies related to changing influent characteristics and/or changing permit requirements.
  • Conducts formal internal investigations or troubleshoots any regulatory, process, or procedural treatment issues, reports such findings to the process optimization & planning manager, WRRF operations manager, and/or WRRF supervisors.
  • Supports engineering led capital projects for assigned WRRFs and ensures proper alignment between project goals and operational expectations and provides accurate data from plant operations.
  • Compiles, analyzes, and visualizes complex information and data and prepares formal reports and recommendations for problem resolution to supervisors.
  • Collaborates effectively with WRRF supervisors, operations staff, and operations managers and develops creative and technically sound solutions to process related treatment issues and opportunities.
  • Collaborates with and supports internal and external entities and develops process related solutions to satisfy operational needs, including, but not limited to, pretreatment, laboratory, engineering, asset management, IT, and external consultants.
  • Utilizes WIMS (Water Information Management System) to obtain and manage WRRF operating data.
  • Creates and administers employee wastewater process training for certification, procedural, regulatory compliance, and the safe and secure operation of treatment facilities.
  • Develops and maintains standard operating procedures for treatment facilities; inspects facilities and processes to ensure adherence for defined procedures.
  • Supports, creates, and maintains continuous improvement activities, including, but not limited to root cause analysis, daily management system, and focused improvements.
  • Independently identifies, justifies, and scopes special projects related to WRRF treatment performance and efficiency.
  • Independently develops complex experimental designs that satisfy multiple requirements to support departmental special projects.
  • Independently designs and executes complex WRRF pilot studies to gain operational information for special projects in conjunction with daily WRRF operation.
  • Conducts detailed analysis related to cost and treatment reliability to scope and justify special projects and departmental research goals.
  • Summarizes complex special project data and generates formal reports detailing results, recommendations, and next steps.
  • Manages and prioritizes assigned special projects, directs work of consultants and contractors on said projects and reviews data and results to determine success.
  • Researches and investigates novel treatment technologies and recommends for planning and/or special project proposals.
  • May serve on call to support WRRF supervisors with technical assistance during plant upsets and high-pressure troubleshooting situations.
  • Attends training, seminars, workshops, and conferences as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills.
  • Management may assign additional duties as trained for and qualified to do so related to the work of the position as necessary.

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
  • Must possess a bachelor’s degree in environmental, chemical, civil, biosystems, or related engineering or related technical degree.
  • Requires a minimum of five (5) years of wastewater operations experience or equivalent experience.
  • Must possess a class “A” Biological Wastewater Operator License or can acquire within two (2) years of start date.
  • Ability to obtain PE certification.
  • Must have strong understanding of wastewater process fundamentals including but not limited to, nitrification/denitrification, biological phosphorus removal, chemical treatment, batch flux settling curves, mass balances, dosing calculations, anaerobic digestion, chemical and UV disinfection, etc.
  • Must have strong understanding of NPDES permitting.
  • Experience conducting formal research or displaying the following skills: experimental design, study execution, and interpretation of findings.
  • Experience utilizing Microsoft office suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, etc.) to visualize and communicate ideas and data.
