Job Description - Production Manager

Job Summary


The Production Manager will lead a team of mechanics, welders, and assemblers in a heavy equipment yard focused on light make-ready and pre-delivery preparation of OEM-specific machinery. This position requires strong mechanical knowledge of heavy construction equipment and the ability to oversee hands-on tasks such as basic mechanical assembly, welding, hydraulic prep, and inspection. The Production Manager is responsible for coordinating daily workflows that ensure equipment meets OEM specifications and is fully operational, safe, and ready for shipment to the end user.




Supervisory Responsibilities



  • Recruits, trains, and manages a skilled team of mechanics, welders, and assemblers.

  • Delegates work orders and daily assignments based on equipment readiness schedules.

  • Oversees performance, provides coaching, and supports technical development of team members.

  • Administers corrective action and terminations in compliance with company policies.




Duties and Responsibilities



  • Lead daily operations in the heavy equipment yard, ensuring timely execution of mechanical prep and light assembly work for OEM equipment.

  • Supervise and support associates performing:

    • Mechanical assembly (e.g., track installation, fluid fills, attachment mounting)

    • Welding and fabrication of light structures or mounts

    • Hydraulic line hookup, testing, and leak checks

    • Final inspections and operational checks



  • Read and interpret OEM technical manuals, schematics, and pre-delivery checklists.

  • Ensure all prep work aligns with manufacturer standards and equipment is operational before shipment.

  • Collaborate with logistics teams to coordinate equipment readiness and delivery timelines.

  • Monitor and enforce safe tool and equipment usage, including hand, pneumatic, and power tools.

  • Oversee use of inspection software or digital checklists to document equipment condition and work performed.

  • Support budgeting and materials forecasting to meet production needs.

  • Lead daily safety talks, maintain compliance with OSHA and hazardous materials regulations, and enforce all yard safety protocols.

  • Maintain a clean, organized work environment conducive to safe mechanical work.

  • Serve as point-of-contact for customers and OEM partners regarding equipment condition, readiness, and quality expectations.

  • Perform other duties as needed.




Required Skills and Abilities



  • Strong leadership background managing skilled tradespeople in mechanical and fabrication roles.

  • In-depth mechanical understanding of OEM heavy equipment (e.g., excavators, loaders, dozers, etc.).

  • Ability to troubleshoot hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical issues at a basic level.

  • Familiarity with light welding, fabrication, and common prep tasks required for equipment shipment.

  • Proficiency with digital inspection tools and work order systems.

  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and decision-making skills.

  • Commitment to quality, safety, and team development.




Education and Experience



  • Associate’s degree in Diesel Technology, Industrial Maintenance, or related field; or equivalent experience.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Management, Engineering, or a related technical discipline is a plus.

  • At least 3 years of supervisory experience in a heavy equipment, construction, or manufacturing environment.

  • Hands-on experience with OEM machinery from manufacturers such as CAT, Komatsu, Hitachi, John Deere, or similar is strongly preferred.




Physical Requirements



  • Prolonged periods of walking and standing outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • Climbing, kneeling, and crawling on and around equipment up to 15 feet in height.

  • Lifting up to 50 lbs regularly.

  • Exposure to loud noise, grease, oil, and industrial work environments.




Working Conditions



  • Primarily outdoor work in an active equipment yard.

  • Regular exposure to sun, rain, cold, and heat.

  • Daily use of PPE including hard hats, steel-toed boots, gloves, and safety glasses.
